I'd also think it was a wheel bearing before I would think it was an axle. Axles don't howl.

i had a cracked tranny casing and didnt know it until they flagged me down at the track dripping M/T fluid all over...well i had a long drive infront of me, maybe 40 mins back home on a sunday all shops closed, and I asked the guy at the track what it would sound/feel like when I was almost out on fluid. He said that I probably wouldnt feel a difference in the actual shifting, but that something would start to howl when it wasnt lubed enuf......but I forgot what

I dont know just trying to give ya an idea

How many miles do u have on ur teg? And I know that axles don't make a howling sound, only wheel bearing does when it's crapping out. Wheel bearing cost around 80 bucks for one wheel if you were wondering how much they cost.
