Default race fuel question

Does a car have to be tuned on race fuel for it to do any good? my friends car was tuned on 10psi on 91octane, can he put 112oct. race fuel in his car and bump up the boost to 14psi? or does he have to go get it tuned on 112?

But lets say it was tuned on 14psi, would race fuel help it from detonating? or does race fuel only work if its tuned on it??

only if he was detenating on pump gas at 14lbs. it also depends on how his fuel/ignitions maps look in the 14lb area. what was it tuned with?

If you are tuned for pump gas you can, quite possibly, loose power by running a higher octane fuel. Higher octane fuels burn slower which is why you have to light the fire sooner (ie more timing) to maximize power with it. This way you are taking full advantage of the burn and maximizing the force applied to the piston. If you just dump in a slower burning fuel with the same ignition timing some of the fuel will still be burning when the piston hits BDC and, thus you have wasted energy. Keep in mind we are talking miliseconds here and the power difference is very minimal..... but noteworthy IMO. On the other hand, it may be more than worthwhile to sacrifice a HP or two in the name of preventing detonation.
