Overheating. Only at low RPMs. Please Help.
Like the topic states, I have searched, but am more confused now than before...Plus I have a head cold, and am on Meds.
I can drive all day long (at 4-5k rpms) with no problems, But once I hit 5th gear (or any gear) and sit at about 2-3.5k rpms I notice my temp gauge goes up. This also happens at idle. I turn on my AC to cool down for city driving.
Now is this a thermostat not opening problem or what?
Car: 97 ls 145k
no leaks, no smoke from exhaust, reserve is ok, please help a sick idiot out

replace your thermostat, do a coolant flush and you should be good.
the exact same thing happened to me. i did the above and made sure i filled the coolant all the way up, and now it runs cooler than it did before.

Could be a thermostat, but also consider a block somewhere else like the radiator. ALso maybe something wrong withthe water pump. Check your temp. sensor too, just to make sure.
Thanks for the replys. Thats the route I was going, but I just wanted to see if that fixed any one else before I spend the money. I hate domino effect problems like this. I dont want to change this flush that and bleed till I go insane.
I will change that **** and update.
Again, thanks for not flaming me.

In theory would the colant system flush clear out the block if it exsist?

Sure, I had this exact problem on my Teg. At first thought it was the head gasket, but i took out the radiator and found it blocked up with liquid glass (designed to seal the head gasket). $35 later with a user radiator from the junk yard I was good to go. Anyway, I have found that with these kind of problems it is best to keep humble and be methodical. Of course it is easier to try the quick fixes first like a thermostat. Best of luck.!
Thermostat changed. Problem solved.
I knew it was the thermostat also, because the lower hose would remain cool, and never reach the same temp as the upper hose.
I am driving around like an ******* again, without any problems.
