what does it sound like when a vavlespring or retainer breaks?

i was driving home the other night and my car(92 4 door with gsr) shook a little and it starts fine but makes a clicking. never heard anything like it. any ideas?

having a retainer or valve spring break would sound like an explosion becuase your engine would be toast once the valve drops into the cylinder.
