Default And the score is: MPFI 1, SiMateoAko 0

So I was in the junkyard today looking for an interior door panel for my gir's CRX when I beheld a 1988 CRX Si. I've been looking for a 2nd gen CRX Si for a while now so i could get the parts needed for a MPFI swap down the line.

I pulled out my tools and started pulling, turning, and removing everything in my way. I removed a bunch of bolts with no problem at all.

Until I got to the bolt between fuel injectors 2 and 3. It's that 12mm bolt in the middle and it's almost impossible to get to.

I try for over an hour and I can't get good leverage on that damn thing.

I go home, eat, and come back for more. THe more I try, the more the bolt gets stripped.

I decided to remove the entire head and then tackle it. Since I've never done anything remotely close to this before, I just start tearing **** up. I took out the radiator, the fans, and removed the exhaust manifold. I then remove the valve cover and start removing those 10 14mm bolts that I'm assuming hold the head on. I remove 9 of them with a little help from my good friend "the letter f" and lots of grunting. the 10th one won't budge. So I pull on my wrench... and I pull... and I pull.. and SNAP. The damn socket cracks.

So I try a few more times to get the original bolt off, and Ijust gave up.

I went home with a PM6 ECU and an Injector Resistor Box, but no dizzy or MPFI.

Is there another car I can remove this from? does it have to be the CRX SI? I think I've seen these on accords before, could they be safe to use?

Or, is there a way to get to that last bolt without killing myself?

MPFI may have won the battle, but I'll eventually win this damn war.

Take a hammer. I don't know why but if you want you could smash something to relieve some stress. That's what I do.

One step ahead of you. I went out and bought a new set of forged steel sockets and vice grips. I'll be damned if this thing gets the best of me.

I'm still going to try to take the head off though, as it is the only way I'll be able to get to the bolt I can't reach.

Then when I'm done, I'm going to smash the ******* windshield.

Steel forged....nice

I am totally digging my Husky pro set. Cheap enough to loose, but built to almost Craftsmans Warranty.

if this was just a stipped bolt I wouldn't fret. The problem is that this bolt is IMPOSSIBLE to get to. A socket wrench fits back there with about a half of a centimeter of moving room.

If I can't remove the head, I'm going to remove the entire engine tomorrow. But after I do that, the bolt will be EASY to get to

You're talking crazy talk. The plan is to get all of the pieces now b/c they are available and then put them in my garage until sometime later this year when I'm done finishing my basement and need a new project to keep me busy.

Besides, I don't know jack crap about engines, but I'd say that the giant gouge I saw in one of the cylinders today wasn't a good thing.

Lol putting in is just the opposite of taking out

Also to take off the cylinder head. You need to take off the timing belt (just cut it). And coolant lines plus there is a intake manifold bracket on the back of the block. Also the engine harness goes over the intake manifold so that will need to be taken off. And the fuel line that goes from filter to the rail will need to be undone.

I know I have got it off used 2-3 swivels I think. Its definately a stupid place for a bolt I think.

Dont forget, you can use a z6 or y8 intake just as easily as the a6. HT members and Ebay will have what you need.

I wouln't say just as easily. Its better but there are some differences. It will bolt up but you will need to switch injectors (unless you want to deal with wiring), map sensor (unless you use d16a6 throttle body), and some sensor on the back of the intake manifolds are different, not to mention a coolant line

I personally use a closed end wrench and not a socket/ratchet.
I reach under the intake manifold from the driver side of the car and get it on the nut.
There isn't much room, but you only need to get it to loosen a little so you can get that thing off of there!

Yes, any 90/91 Civic EX will have the parts you need.

I can never find an Si in the junkyard. But I find EX's every few weeks.

I tried this too. I used a 12mm closed end wrench and for a second it seemed like it was going to happen.

Nope.

The bolt might be just stuck on there. I keep stripping it, so I'm going to wait until I can get the head off first and then tackle it from the ground.

How in the world am I supposed to torque this bolt properly when I put it back on? I don't want to remove the headof my car when I put the intake manifold on just so I can get the proper torque settings.

That's an option too, but I'm trying to get better fuel economy out of this swap. I've talked with a few people who build engines and they all agree that switching to MPFI is going to increase my fuel economy (assuming I don't drive like the grease lightening). I'm trying to build a car that gets 50mpg, and this is one of the swaps I'm going to do.

And hey, if it hurts my mileage I'll just swap back to DPFI. No harm no foul.

go with a 92-95 Civic VX (uh d15z1?). You'll get good mileage there. Otherwise go with a HF ecu/setup. Better gas mileage too.

Yeah, I looked into the VX, and I also looked into swapping the d15z1 into my sedan. I can't find a HF in the junkyard for anything. I've only seen 3 2nd gen CRXs in the last 3 months, and this is the first Si I've seen.

What I do want to eventually do is install the 4th and 5th gear from a HF tranny into my tranny. Give me lower RPMs for cruising.

Get a 4spd tranny that will lower your rpms throughout all gearing. I would the VX would since it from a heavier car plus you'll have VTEC... -E.

Nah but perhaps you could take a dremel to the bolt or a torch? I know Aluminum burns easy so not sure if it would work or not lol.
