Default Oil Change Question

Hey. I did a search and read somewhere that when you unscrew the drain plug to drain out the oil that there is a washer there. They said that you need to get a new one because if you use the old one it will leak oil out? Is that true? If so, where can I find this washer? Thanks.

It's recommended. I change mine on my teg cause she's my baby. But the 1st time I changed my oil on my civ I noticed it had not been changed in a while and it wasn't leaking...

I've done oil changes without replacing the washer (I think it's called the crush washer) and had no leaks, but it's recommended. Any Acura (or probably Honda too) will have it. It's cheap, and if you run into the right parts guys, they'll just hand you a few for free. I think it helps long term because when you tighten down the bolt, the stress goes more into the disposable and softer washer rather than your oil pan. You'll notice also that the bolt has a wavy contact area (last I remember), and so I'd rather have that imprinted onto a washer than my oil pan.

It is most definately supposed to be replaced at every oil change. It prevents leaks and stripping out your oil pan.

its one of those things that should be replaced everytime, but more likely than not most people don't do it. For many reasons; like not remembering to get one then draining the oil and not having a way to get one because your car is disabled till new oil can be put in.
Honda uses a metal one i believe, but i know at toyota we replace them when they leak or when they get torqued down so tight that they turn into Flaky paper. Also we replace them if they stick to the oil pan rather than coming off with the drain bolt.

it won't necessarily leak out - you're supposed to change it, but i haven't a few times - it's fine. Just change it when you can. They're cheap, and honda usually gives you the washer with the filter, if not, just ask for one i'm sure they have it right there.
