I went to the 05 TAS this year and I booked my flight to Japan through a Canadian travel firm. I was cheaper to leave from Canada believe it or not. I flew Japan Air

Try an Asian travel agent; I'm sure there a bunch in Toronto given the large Chinese population. They should be able to offer a variety of "consolidator" economy class fares, which should be cheaper than anything you could find on Orbitz, Expedia, etc.

Try the travel agents in the scarborough/markham area... it cost me less than $1100 last year from Active Travel in Pacific mall almost exactly this time last year. I flew the year before that for just over $1400... with the stronger dollar might even be less this year...

There may be better deals for Air Canada sometimes... but for me... JAL is the way... The only down side is that you'll have to get a connecting flight to Chicago before boarding JAL (as they do not fly directly out of Toronto). But this is usually all arranged by the agent, don't worry.

If you are travelling around Japan (i.e. not just staying in Tokyo), you'll probably want to pick up a JR Pass at an agent (only available outside of Japan) and for the price of a normal shinkansen trip between Tokyo and Osaka, you'll be able to travel anywhere from Sapporo to Nagasaki for 7 days The only down side is that you cannot use the super express Nozomi trains... but whats another 30 minutes if you are on vacation... not to mention that you are saving hundreds, even thousands of dollars, depending on how aggressive you are...

for the price of a normal shinkansen trip between Tokyo and Osaka </TD></TR></TABLE> well you can usually get a shinkansen pass from tokyo to osaka for around 200, and airlines are usualy even cheaper if you can find a special...
not quite the same price which is why its a gamble for some.. However they are extemely convient. Good for domestic travel (city to city) and even better for local commuting..
i decided to get it, rather than buy a roundtrip ticket from tokyo to osaka strickly for convience reasons.. much quicker to board a train than an airplane. and then i can travel locally for free for the next 7 days...

let us know the cheapest deal you can find, my guess would also be to look in markham... and get a connecting flight out to chicago, and get the 7 day pass.. should make for a cheaper trip for sure, good luck!

I think it depends on where the link is from. The site is just a search engine that searches airlines, travel agencies, and other web sites. More than likely the price is American, but if the price is pulled form a canadian link it might be canadian or CDN converted to USD

Ditto, they have some kind of back door for "bootleg" cheap economy tickets. LOL

I was booking a one-way ticket to China, and Cheaptickets.com quote me $990 for Cathay Pacific Economy. My agent got the same flight for me for $565.

If this is your first time traveling long distance, I recommend JAL for your own personal comfort. JR Pass can be purchase at the agent just below the airport, usually 1hr per train to Tokyo/ShinJuKu

actually this isnt true..
the pass needs to be purchased outside of japan where you will then recieve a voucher. only then, can you redeem your voucher for the actual pass which is indeed on the bottom floor of Narita International Airport.

where do you want to stay?

if you're going to kyoto or tokyo i can give you two places to stay - they're traveler's hotels so they're nothing fancy, but they're affordable and have everything you need (bed, bathroom, shower, etc).

Hmmm...not with me, I just gothere and purchase the ticket for the upcoming train and works every time. I work for a Japanese company so when I visit the headquarter in Tokyo, this is how it goes. My co-worker in Tokyo said there is no need to pre-arrange tickets for JR as it's rarely full...especially there are more possibility of delay from international flights, buy it on-the-spot is easier for me. However, I do make reservation when I leave from Narita.

my mistake, i thought you were talking about the JR rail pass. Even with a rail pass, you still need to have a ticket for the train, which of course is free.
on a side note, i nearly missed a flight outa narita when the train i needed to board was indeed full. I still got on anyways, and showed my pass when the conductor came by to check tickets

penpen flew out of Seattle with me -- I took her there for anniv./bday/grad present. It was Toronto-&gt;Seattle-&gt;Narita.

It was during the high season so tickets to/from Seattle were ~$880. And tix to/from Toronto were ~$450 -- I suspect it would have been cheaper to go straight from Toronto to Narita, but then it would have been harder for us to get on the same flight.

Contact IACE --&gt; http://www.iace-usa.com/

They had the best fare that I could find (some Japanese friends that live in the US recommended them as did someone here on H-T).

I hope that helps.
