Default Automatic Transmission power handling

I have looked for an answer to this everywhere, and I swear, either I suck at searching, or no one's really bothered to ask.

I'd like to know what kind of power my automatic transmission can handle. The car is a 1996 Accord EXR, egine code is F22B1.

I'm not looking to hit the dragstrip, however, I'd like a little more power.

Any ideas as to how much the tranny can handle reliably? I can put in a TQ converter and a shift kit no problem; I'm just wondering about the strength of the internals.

Thanks!!

Well............., with all those USDM Preludes out there, and (although a minority) the JDM H22 auto swaps, you could assume 200 hp is not an unreasonable value. At higher levels (as I've observed), the automatic handles turbo applications better, while the Manual Trans vehicles handle All-Motor applications better.
Automatics/turbo because the automatic handles power ok once its' hooked up and turbos' develope power when they have something to "push" against (and the gas pedal doesn't need to be released during shifts)
Manuals/Naturally Aspired because they tolerate hole shots off line better than an automatic (definite No-No), and the All-Motor can develope power right off idle.

200hp either way; pick your poison if you want to go higher

Does anyone make any upgraded internals for these automatics? Like better clutches and steels, converters, valve body mods...etc?

it wont handle it very well.. hell even with factory set hp the auto trannies are dying. ive read so many posts of dead honda auto trannies. my auto took a **** after 2 yrs of very light nitrous use with a tranny cooler. converted it to manual and never looked back.

aftermarket tq convertor and what not will cost more than a manual conversion (well atleast for me cuz i did the conversion myself) unless you have a hook up on the tq conv and shift kit.

Are you sure they weren't post about 6cyl autos dying? Those are pretty much a given...if you own a 6cyl auto, you WILL replace the trans at LEAST once. I've worked for Honda since 86 and we very rarely seen problems with the 4cyl auto. My 95 Odyssey has 206k on the original trans right now and other than a slight delay going from park to drive it works perfect. And it was NOT maintained at all. When I first bought it the fluid was black and burnt. I've been changing it every oil change since and it looks like new now.

For some of us, auto is the only choice. Not that the Odyssey will be a beast, but I plan on a replacing the engine, when needed, with a lower mileage F22 with a F23 VTEC upper end and hanging a small turbo on it for some extra passing power. I'm sure I won't be racing with it but there could be the occasional "excessive acceleration" when needed and right now it just has NO power.
