ok today i was talking to my buddy who messes with cars too. he said that its possible to clean a cat. like renew it. by pouring some kind of solvent and sort of washing the cat out. is this posisble? i dont really trust this guys knowledge of cars to destroy a cat over it

oh and i wonder what the chemical properties are of that product... from what it says it does sounds like something that could be directed @ people who want to pass emissions.

This stuff = "Gurantee to Pass" or "Never Fail" (that stuff you find @ AutoZone.)

woohoo just passed smog all the pollutants measured in the double digits. co was .02 and .01 hc was 24 and 11 and nox was 62 and 16 thats at 15mph and 25 mph.

my other car failed with a nox of like 2000 lets see if the new cat will help it haha. it still comes out cheaper than a funny smog

You are not going to 'clean' a dead/clogged cat with a solvent. Cats die because (1) alot of the catalytic material gets blown away with time, and/or (2) deposits form on the surface of the catalyst. And these deposits are BAKED onto the surface. A solvent will NOT remove them. Furthermore, a clogged cat is the result of a core meltdown. This is also not going to be fixed with a solvent. Bottom line: replace the cat.

ok by request im going to post the numbers for my 2 cars that i had to smog. both of them passed everything except nox. and both had to have the timing adjusted.

both smogs cost 80$ 70+10 for the retest (160)
i went to 2 different smog shops 4 times in total
muffler shop once new cat (120)
sears once (timing light) (60)

total cost (340) to smog both cars

FIRST CAR 91 civic EX 230k miles. no mods. 1st test had the 2.5 inch pipe with a 230k mile cat.

i have pictures i dont know if youll be able to see. but ill try

for the first car ill jsut type it out cuz u cant see **** on the pictures.

actually ill only type out nox cuz thats the thing that failed and im lazy

ok before nox was 1106 at 15mph and 790 at 25mph. it was pretty close to passing.

after the new cat and stock piping. it measured 62 at 15mph and 16 at 25 mph. passed with flying colors. my other car wasnt so lucky

88 CIVIC DX. obd1 d16z6 swap intake header adjustable fpr set at mystery pressure 2.5 inch pipe and crappy 230k mile cat.
timing was at 12btdc but i didnt know.
nox measured 2388 at 15mph and 1110 at 25mph

also the tech tested the car in 2nd gear at 15 and 3rd at 25 but my EX was tested in 1st and 2nd. i dont know if it made it worse.

after the new cat nox measured 766 at 15mph and 803 at 25 mph. the limit at 25mph was 812. i was only 9ppm off hahaha. im a lucky sob. but i dont know why the z6 ran so much poorer than the 230k mile d16a6. anyone care to elaborate?

If I could get much further away from California without falling into the ocean I would. I don't know how you folks do it. Next year I'll pay $12 to put a sticker in each of my cars. Even with the emissions test this year, it's only $30...
