TRANNY PROBLEM , Hard 2 shift into third gear occasionally & Engine UPGRADE INQUIRY!! !!!!
Went to the track yesterday with my crx(b16a header back exhaust, lol car is slammed so headers are questionable @ this point , cai, vafc2- just installed , not tuned as yet, short shift & chipped.). Future mods- headers, VT upgrade, S2stage2 cams, type-R pistons, S2 cam gears & possibly type- R intake manifold.
So I was racing down the quated mile, didnot powershift, just shifted quick & did just 4 passes. 2 out of 4 times shifting from 3'rd - 4'th gear was not possible, don't know why. This is the second time this happened, had the same problem last time @ the track, so i just let it bounce off the redline @ a few passes.
Now when I try to shift quck, it doesnot want to go into third gear occasionally, I do have a new clutch cable & I have lucas oil in my tranny. & I do hope this is in the right forum this time.
About my future mods... after installing the type-R pistons is it necessary to rebalance the motor. I use my car for daily driving too, so I don't wanna do any aggressive upgrades.
hmm.. did you put the new clutch cable in? maybe it needs adjusting? not trying to talk down on you, just a possibility? could the synchros in the transmission also? and what kind of lucas oil is it that you have in the transmission?? is it gear oil or something?
well installed the clutch cable by my self a couple of month's ago, the car seemed fine after that. I 'm not sure about the type of oil that's in the tranny, I can definately find that out tomorrow
Your tranny gears may be bad... they probably have a grove in them which mays it hard to get into gear...
I had the same problem, fine on the street, then at the track, couldn't get it out of gear, then when it did come out, couldn't get it into the next gear.

Not an expert by any means but I would say synchros. Could be you're having the problem at the track because of the high engine speeds your seeing there that you probably don't see on the streets. If the synchro is just beginning to fail it will be noticable at the high/low extremes when shifting as it has trouble bringing the speeds together. Sure it could be other things which I have no idea of though also.
Does it grind or not shift if you are down shifting from 4th to 3rd?
The most likely cause is a bad syncro, BUT it could also be a clutch issue. Some clutches can't fully release in the split second that you are trying to shift the car, and you will create shifting issues.
Also check your shifter linkage for play, (wear in bushings).
And engine mounts that are worn or cracked.
Some of these things will affect the other gear changes, but always good to check

it doesnot grind, it mostly happens while up shifting, haven't noticed the problem while down shifting as yet.All that I do is let go of the clutch & try again with a firmer push which is usually successful.
