there are no splines on the flywheel...splines are on the transmission and clutch disc...and they would be different on years 88 compared to 89-91...

That has to do with the splines on the input shaft of the transmission counting 21, whereas everything from 1989-at least 2000 is 20. However there is another problem which cost me some cash and I will explain so you dont do the same.
I had a massive-*** problem with clutches and flywheels earlier. An '89 flywheel will NOT bolt with a clutch from 1990-2000. I'm not sure about a clutch from 1988.
It's all in the diameter of the clutch surface. Let me find the diagram and I will post up.

^^ in order to buy a new Centerforce stage 2 clutch for my car, I had to steal the flywheel off of my 1994 civic CX d15b8 engine, because they don't make any for my 1989 flywheel.
So the exact model (hf, dx, si) never has anything to do with it, only year?
I wish Advance had this stuff figured out, most of the transmission stuff was just called a day and listed as the same for all years.

Correct, the transmission model does not matter only the year.
