97 sohc vtec int 90 crx... what's needed wiring-wise
Hey all...
We started the sohc vtec swap into my sons car, of course the mechical part is easy being the same block. BUT, we've found some wiring differences of course. What parts of which harness and sensors do we keep from which engine and what do we need to buy? For example, the t/b on the 97 has an electric plug, but the 90 has a vacuum hook-up. The alternators have different size plugs. Is there a good place/thread that breaks all of this down?
Please advise... email is preferable, but I'll try and check this post often too. ANY help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Scott aka B-Kerr

What model CRX is the car? Depending on the model, you may need to modify the existing wiring harness to MPFI (Multi Point Fuel Injection). Also, depending on what ecu you will be using, you may need a OBD conversion harness. As for the alternator, you can use the one that was on the motor that came out of the car.
Thanks for the help... the car is a 90 CRX Si - it had the 1.6 sohc. We are unsure as to what computer to use, but we want to retain the VTEC (I think). Suggestions?
As always, we appreciate any help!
Thanks,

It all depends on what route you want to take. You can use the existing wiring and run the motor with the Si ecu and use some sort of vtec activation device (i.e.~VAFC). If you go this route, you need to use the Si distributor on the D16Y8 head (fortunately it will bolt up perfectly). If you go OBD1, you will need a 92-95 Civic EX/Si distributor and ECU, plus a OBD0-OBD1 conversion harness. Like wise if you go OBD2. The main thing to remember is that the distributor and the ecu has to match (same OBD) or else you are going to run into some problems.
