Default Good idea to fab up downpipe while engine is on a stand?

Hi guys,

I was thinking about welding up my 3" DP with the motor still out of the car. I figured it would be easier to do with the motor still out of the car. I was gonna install the motor into the car and weld the stuff up at the hobby shop. But since my block and head are still apart I think I'm just gonna take that stuff home and do it here. If I do this stuff at home I can take my time and do it right, cause at the hobby shop they tend to rush me cause I'm taking up an extra stall space.

I'm gonna put the block on a stand, put the 2 block dowel pins in place (B18C) and stick the head on without the headgasket in place. Then I was gonna just use 2-4 old head bolts and only tighten them a little to keep the head on. I was going to use my old DP and copy the same angle so that there wont be any crossmember clearance issues. Once I'm done with all this I can just take the head off and take everything back to the hobby shop where I'm gonna install everything.

Do you guys think that sounds like a good idea?

TIA

Depends on how accurate your copy is. It would suck to fab up all of that stuff just to have it hit the crossmember because your angle was 5° off.

Does the hobby shop stress out about taking your time now? I remember when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton I would keep my car in the hobby shop for weeks at a time. As long as I was paying they didn't care. (And I didn't care into one of those ******** stole my Holley 4160 carburator and Edelbrock manifold)

Yah the stall that they have reserved for welding is hard to get into sometimes. I have to tell them a day or two in advance when I wanna use it. But even then it is usually occupied. The thing that sucks the most is the guy in charge of the shop wont let you cut metal piping. I have a ACE hardware 10" compund miter saw with fiber woven cutting disks and to use it he says I need a permit from the fire dept. The othe guys that work there dont care, but this guy started pinging when he saw my miter saw.

Below are some pics of the clearance I have and it looks like there is plenty of room.
