Default 87 civic what d series motor can i upgrade too?

Hey guys im looking at buying a 87 civic for a daily driver but it has a blown headgasket on a 249,000 mile motor so i was looking to upgrade to a better d series tell me what will fit not fimiliar with the pre 91 swaps

D16A1 from a 1G integra is your easiest route.

I dont need anything performance i just want a better motor for daily maybe sohc vtec but just a lower mileage motor

there arent many motors that will fit without MAJOR modifications, and it all depends on if the Civic is an Si or not. If not, it's carb'd and therefore swapping the fuel system/wiring from an Si is needed before going Fi. If it IS an Si, here are some options:

Replace with what was in it
D16A1 from 1G integra
B16 (needs mounts, costs $$$$$$)

those are the easiest three. If it's carb'd and you dont want to do a lot of work you might as well just rebuild what you've got.

if its already d series then any d series will swap in but no new trannys that are hydrolic only cable theres a way to do it but relocating stuff sucks if i was you i would just spend the money on a cheap like d16a6 and just vtec it you can get the plug and play harness dumb cheap and the power difference for the little S.O.H.C is pretty noticable but thats my opinion though throught i would share.
