Clunking Noise from Front End HELP!
1st off, I drive a 96 Honda Civic HB w/ d16y7 engine and a d16z6 tranny. The powertrain is pretty much stock w/ the exception of an catback exhaust (2.25" mandrel bent) and a short ram air intake.
My suspension is modded w/:
-tokico bushings
-tokico (non-adjustable) struts
-cross member (h brace)
-front and rear upper strut bars,
-tein s-tech springs
stock suspension pts which was replaced as of March 2005:
-tie rod ends
-front lower ball joints
Now that that is out of the way, here is my problem...on July 22nd I noticed a clunking (sounds like dong) noise every time I accelerate from being stationery and accelerate after decelerating. The 1st thing I did was jacked up my car and inspected all of the suspension components. Everything seemed tight and clean upon completion of my inspection so I decided to send my car to my mechanic. Well my mechanic found a worn out shift linkage bushing so we replaced it but the problem is still there. He then inspected and ripped apart all of my suspension and found nothing wrong and conclusively said that my car was safe to drive but he couldn't figure out the problem. This is b/c everything he inspected (exhaust, engine mounts, suspension) was tight and in good working order. Then I took the car to the best alignment shop in my city and they couldnt find anything wrong either and told me that the suspension on my civic was in better shape than any other lowered "import" which they have done work on. Here's the thing, eventhough myself along w/ 2 liscensed and trustworthy mechanics tld me that my car is safe, I do not feel comfortable participating in an autox event until this issue is resolved. Any suggestions or have any of u other honda people had this problem b4.

Upper bal joints are fine? Do you have a front camber kit? if so are the bushings good on those?
The only other thing i can think of is the motor mounts. But you said you had those looked into.

Try checking your upper driver's side motor mount, again. You need to take off the metal piece that connects the chassis to the engine so you can see the rubber bushing underneath clearly. Have your engine supported when you take it off w/ a jack and a flat piece of wood under the oil pan. From my search, this is a common failure on hatchbacks, for some reason.
had the same problem a few weeks back, but mine was more like a popping sound initially, then got worse as the bushing tore up. drove me crazy finding it, as it's doing to to you.
Good luck.
