Has anyone ever *added* sound insulation to an ITR?
I guess that's a stupid sounding question, but I was wondering if anyone knew of anyone who just felt like their ITR was too loud for daily driving and wanted it a bit quieter. I've seen s2000 owners talk about ways of doing this and was just curious. Everyone I've talked to has said that even a stock ITR is pretty loud and 'raw', i.e. a bit of a handfull for a daily driver when there are quieter options out there (prelude or even a gsr). I mean just how loud does it get, and are there any ways to quiet one down any that don't necessarily involve taking the car apart?
(I did a search but couldnt find anything on this)

I cant imagine anyone wanting to do that to their ITR. Why even bother with the type of car?

Why? If you don't like the sound, don't buy the car! Adding sound insulation to an aRRR is more than silly, it's down right stupid.
Hype R's are only *that* loud when your right foot is on the floor.
Mrs. Splat, being the audiologist she is, brought a dB meter to a dyno day in Charlotte one time. On the way back, we took some cabin readings. WOT in 3rd gear netted some readings in the 80-ish dB SPL range (windows up, radio off). That's pretty loud for a stock car.

Thank you. To a previous poster I don't really see why I could only ask that question if I actually owned an ITR... Only itr owners are allowed to learn things about ITRs?
I know it sounds like a stupid question but I've already gone through the "My car is too loud to hear the radio or talk on the phone" stage of my life and it was fun while it's lasted but I'm glad it's over, but I'm quite a ways away from the " I don't care what I drive as long as it's a toyota camry" stage. I figure if there was some secret way to make an itr more liveable while only adding about 10 pounds it would be worth it and as cool as it is to be able to say your car is such a factory racer that it doesnt even add sound deadening, all the other car enthusiasts I know who have removed it from their cars in the attempt to make their cars perform better end up gaining little or no performance and then hating how loud they made their cars a year or two down the line and regretting it.
So anyway that's where this question comes from. I don't mind a car that's loud at WOT at all, I just don't want something that would make my ears bleed on a 5 hour roadtrip and since I've never actually ridden in an ITR (unlucky? lol) and all i hear are reports of how loud and uncomfortable they are with no way of verifying it, one starts to wonder.

Yes.
An ITR is loud for a STOCK car and nothing more. The only people that complain about it being too loud stock are 70yr old magazine reviewers that ride around testing Mercedes all day. Listening to the radio and talking on the phone are in no way a problem. Unless you are use to riding in ultra quiet cars you shouldn't have any worries.
This comes from a guy who use to drive his around stripped out and open header.

Thanks for the helpful reply. I guess I need to find one to drive/ride along in before I can make any decisions.
In terms of a lightweight alternative, I've tried acoustical "egg crate" foam from a recording studio company...it's not oriented the right way, but it's hard to be practical with the crate part up.

doesn't really do much - you also want to be careful about fire...some fire-proof insulation on the inside (between the quarter panels and the inside plastic) might help a lot (I will be trying this soon).

I'm sure several people have dynomated their ITR's for car audio sound-offs. These usually are the same folks who ask about the fitment of 19" dubs on such a car too.
Type-R's are generally loud. Something you can do to prevent road noise from getting into the cabin is get a smooth set of tires. What I mean by this is take care of your tires i.e. right air pressure, correct alignments, no excessive camber wear. All these factors will give your tires uneven tire wear and will cause a harmonic.
For a road trip, keep a stock airbox.
Believe it or not, get earplugs too. If you get the right type you can still hear sharp noises like if a car honks at you, if you hit smoething in the road. I drive my race car on the highway VERY RARELY and this is what I use. It makes my car sound like a Benz or a Lexus.
Mind, my race car has RA1's, Extra gutted interior, and a straight pipe (yep, no exhaust)
Oh BTW, earplugs weigh less than an 0.1 of an ounce too!

Do what you want man. It's not hard to do. Just find some decent insulation and add it in.
Don't let these purists influence what you want to do.

I've seen alot of this lately.
IMO I'd rather hear about someone soundproofing their car instead of someone letting it collect dust in hopes of making a good return years down the road.

i'm with the thread starter actually on this one. i'm quite passed the i don't care how loud stage. i dynamatted the interior of my hatch, the driver/passenger floorboard, the exhaust path, and sparingly in the spare tire area... the difference this made was phenomenal... while only adding 45 lbs tops. u take out your a/c and its equal.

who the **** are you (or anyone else in here who shares this opinion) to tell anyone what they can/cannot do to their own personal property? Unbelievable.
I'm sorry, but when I went to pick up my R at the dealership in '01, I did not get some personality test to determine if I was suited for this car. And I'm fairly certain they never intended the car to be used by a bunch of punk snobs who think that this car is somehow 'worlds ahead' of every other Integra made. Nor did they make this car so it could be the showcase of bling at local meets or make you somehow smarter and more respected. Get over yourselves. This is the type of attitude that has somehow been passed down on this board - problem is most R owners I've met at expo and other places are pretty cool - so im gonna say that you snots that 'carry the torch' are ruining it. Fast.
"If you don't do xyz or dont like lmnop then this car is not for you"
lol. never has there been a more overused phrase in this forum.
lchris - who after owning an R for 4+ yrs, would love to have 2: a track R, and a comfortable street R, with some ammenities like cruise, etc.
