Getting an R1 over an R6 isn't like getting an STi over a WRX. It's more like walking on a tight rope over walking on a plank. It's just plain dangerous.

Putting things into perspective..
Even 600's can race around a track faster than most exotic automobiles.
Imagine running as fast as you can into a brick wall. Ouch, possible concusion, broken bones, even death. That was about 15 mph.
Imagine a stock Honda Civic. Now imagine shedding 2,000lbs from it. That'll be one fast Civic. That's what a 600 feels like.

The main problem w/a 1000cc sport bike is the brutal power delivery it can offer. It can easily spin it's rear wheel around a corner w/a little too much twist on the throttle. That can be instant death if you get thrown off a cliff or onto oncoming traffic.

However, if you're not new to riding and think that you're totally capable of riding some of the quickest man made machines in the world, I say the R1. Be careful and enjoy

If you're a first timer get a 600, some first timers wreck em and then end up getting a bigger bike with the insurance money. I went from a Katana 750 to the 900rr and it was scary.

owning a wrx for 1 yr and driving an 05 sti recently.. i can say the sti is no challenge whatsoever for me to control in terms of speed and handling.. hopping on my friends r6 after about a month off from riding it.. gave me the tingly feeling in my stomache.. i cant even imagine how much pull an r1 will give me.. w/o takin the MSF course i can say i can sustain the bike properly for a squid.. but god damn it has some power.. maybe im makin a 1/2 *** decision gettin a 600cc for my first bike..but my thirst for acceleration has to be filled..

Everyone thinks they have everything under control until they crash. How would you know you're controlling the bike properly if you don't know what the correct way is (iow, if you don't know what you don't know)? Just because you can ride without crashing doesn't mean you're a good rider, it could simply mean that the law of averages hasn't caught up with you yet. Save yourself the pain and possibly avoid an untimely demise and take the MSF.

why would you get a liter bike as your first bike? you have a deathwish or something? i don't even think you should get a bike period if this is already your mentality (having a 1000cc as a first bike)

I have ridden both. The Honda feels great to ride (all but the hard seat). Position is nice, and comfortable...as much as my GSXR is. However, it really feels like it lacks power compared to the R1 and GSXR.

They will both be way too slow. Make sure you turbo whatever you get as only then will you become a Jedi.

Buy a turbo Hayabusa with at least 500hp to the rear wheel. Anything less and you might survive.

Why ask here? The CBR1000RR and Yamaha R1 are so incredible close in performance statistics that it's negligible with said stats on which to base your decision.

So the top three decision making factors should be, which one is easier to find. That could be huge depending on where you live.

Second should be which one is cheaper or who is offering better financing promotions.

Finally though, saving the most important for last, you would probably be better off polling your local street corners and hang out spots, i.e. Starbucks. That would be the group to appeal to so, ask them and also the females on the back. Oh and ask their friends too. See what color moistens their unmentionables the most. Then go from there.

do yourself a favor, take the MSF course and learn how to maneuver a bike the right way...then you'll see why you cant ride a liter bike. Anyone can flick their wrist and go fast in a straight line....

butttttt if you insist, do me a favor and buy an R6 so i can have the parts off it when you wreck it

btw just to back myself up...i've ridden dirt bikes for years, am very comfortable with my riding ability on the street. I've ridden a Gixxer 1000, a new ZX6R and ya know what bike i picked for my first street bike? A Yamaha FZR600, not even close to the ability of a supersport, and i STILL wont unlock its full potential for another two seasons.
Getting a liter bike would be a waste, you'd never use its power or ability. Trust me
