why routine maintenance is so important...or maybe I was just lucky this time
so I went to do a valve adjustment today, took off the valve cover, and saw what was LEFT of my timing belt lol. It was completely shredded down to the cords, apparently from rubbing the crank sensor. the scariest part is that my valve and timing belt covers are trimmed so I can see the belt/gears and you CANT see the damage on the belt. The belt looks perfect from a side view. Ill get a pic later. Everyone go check your timing belts lol
yea...its a good thing you caught it in time...by the way, how many miles is on your engine?

its a new motor, doesnt even have 10K on it yet. Its definitely rubbing something and it appears to be my crank sensor, I think the bracket is bent. Ill know for sure and have it fixed tomorrow.
J/w do most of you guys do your valve adjustments yourself? I just hit 35k today and i was thinking about getting a valve adjustment done. Thanks

I did about 25k ago for the first time and it still runs.
I suggest buying/borrowing the Snap-On tool for about $65 shipped. It'll save you alot of headache. There is a great writeup for first-timers on ITRCA.com I believe.

its too easy not to do.
although the first time you do it, it is very nice to have someone who knows what they are doing guide you through the process.
chris - who had clayton guide him through it for my first valve adjustment at expo 3.... AFTER he planted his face in the welding truck

Just checked mine last week, looked perfect after about 55000 miles. Glad I checked though. Gotta do a valve adjustment once it cools down here in AZ.

Good catch. I just replaced mine a few days ago at 93k
Is it possible that whoever put the timing belt on last has the wrong side of the spacer/washer thing that goes on before the crank pulley facing the timing belt? There is a slight concave to the washer that you want to make sure concaves towards the block.

sorry, didnt get to work on it today. maybe tomorrow and Ill take pics then
no the washer for the timing belt is installed correctly. I have a feeling I might be using the wrong crank sensor from another motor (LS) I had laying around. Unless they are the same then it wouldnt matter but might explain why im getting the crank sensor CEL. Or it could just be bent. Wont know til I feel like taking a look.

That snap on tool makes things so much easier.
That reminds me I'm due for another one.

.....basically it sounds like he had a bent bracket or wrong crank sensor - something that isn't likely a problem for the rest of us.

well, finally got around to putting on a new belt today. only took me just over 2 hrs to do the job so Im proud of myself
anyway, it appears the problem was somehow a bolt from the lower timing belt cover got jammed under the crank sensor inside the belt cover, bent the crank sensor bracket, and was rubbing against the belt!! I have no idea how it got in there or where it came from since all my timing belt cover bolts are accounted for so Im stumped. pics of the damaged goods are coming as soon as I find a camera
