Looking for a decent 'race' shop in NoVa
I need to put in my "new" tranny (LSD + 4.9 FD). The tranny is assembled, I'm just running short on time (and motivation) and I'd like to get it in early next week before I roll out for road atlanta. I may end up getting it done myself - but if I cant, anyone know of a decent shop in NoVa that can knock this out for a reasonable price?
Not a pure race shop but Matt Curry ownes a couple shops in N.VA, they are a allaround shop (reg street, performance, some track only). He used to/still does(?) race, I think he used to instruct too. I don't think that it will be the best price but you dont have to worry about a guy that usually does oil changes trying to slap your tranny on. You get what you pay for.

I just bolted my tranny to my engine a couple days ago, if you need some extra hands, the offer is open. As for the motivation... I could bring us a few red bulls.

Well, curry's is good work, I belive - they did my alignment there and while I had a few reservations about taking the car there initially, they did a fantastic job, were done in an hour and set it up to my specs - and the tech that did the alignment (steve, I think) was a great guy as well. A friend of mine was recently quoted 400-500 labor to do a clutch job, he had all the parts. Thats just more than I want to spend on this, its a 3 hr job with a lift and air tools.

Got a clutch alignment tool? I cant find the one I had and I called/visited every parts store in the NoVa area and no one stocks them. C'mon down, I'll buy the pizza and beer

I couldn't find a CA tool either, I searched around and a few people and my good friend said you could eye it so thats what I did. Haven't tested it yet but it seems to have gone together good.
Anyone know of any adverse effects if you don't use the tool other than possibly making it dificult to get the shaft to go in right? I think that it just makes life a little easier...
What city do you live in RJ?

Well the tool is only there to center the disc so the input shaft on the tranny goes in - its just easier when you're doing this with the motor in the car and its lined up.

I'm in Sterling, good, you're somewhat close.
I did it with the engine sitting on the ground, tranny in my hands, and another person putting in the bolts as I lined it up. Worked good.
Now I am thinking how we are going to lift it up and be able to see at the same time to navigate (I can imagine someone directing "ok, a little to the left" right now).
One of those adjustable height rolly stands would be perfect right now... I guess they make those things for.. oh.. say.. mechanics to mate transmissions to engines... Damn, they always got the good stuff.
Whatever, we will figure it out -always do

one person lays on back under trans and "benches" it up, other person guides it and makes sure it doesnt mangle the PP fingers. Shouldn't take more than 2.5 hours with two people and decent tools.

I am trying to convince the "bossman" to let me have you come up and use my lift and air. He returns Monday from the beach so I can give you a deff yes or no then.
