Default compression test ?

will a compression test tell me if my rings are bad, or do i also have to do a leak down test as well. I have a d16a6 that burns oil like sadam in the gulf war

compression test is to test how much compression is in ur cylinder...it doesnt point out where its leakin from...thats what a leakdown test is for....it shows u how much air is escaping and u can figure out from where

damn pretty much thats it. IF UR MOTOR HAS LOW COMPRESSION IT COULD BE many things D16a6 more than likely rings

Check your brake booster valve, I have seen these malfunction, and it would suck up brake fluid, but your master cylinder has to be leaking a little, which in older cars, all master cylinders usually leak a little.

How do you know for sure you are burning oil and not something else, like brake fluid, or atf ?

But you said the leakdown and compression test were good, sounds like something is not adding up here.

If its burning oil, you are getting oil in the combustion chamber some how. Reasons could be

Bad rings
Bad valve seals

Right now those are the two main things I can think of, its late so I'm probably leaving something out.

Maybe pull your valve cover off and see if you're dripping oil from there, I have seen some bad valve cover gaskets, where the oil will leak down in the tube, and all the one down on the spark plug electrode.

You could also have a leak somewhere in the engine and not know it. I thought my integra was burning oil too, but one of the bolts that goes to the oil pan was missing and it was enought to cause an oil leak through there. It never made a puddle on the ground. You might wanna check that and other sensors around the engine if all your reading are good.

Check the pcv valve. Take it out and shake it. If you hear something rattling inside it is good, If not it is clogged, casuing oil blow-by. The oil then goes into the intake, and burns in the combustion chamber.

One of the main cars that has this problem is Saturn, and last time I checked, for some reason GM did not make gaskets for the older Saturns, so you needed to use gasket maker a lot. Maybe because it was the first year of the saturn, and it was more like a proto type thing. Or maybe because it was GM

I knew the compression numbers were gonna be like that, by the way, those are not good compression numbers like your mechanic said.

well, my old prelude burned oil like a SOB, and i put in some valvoline maxlife oil, and it got rid of the smoke. i think my valve seals were pretty bad in it cause it had 250k without a rebuild. try that.

Try running Chevron Delo 15w-40 oil, It'll slow down the burning of oil until you get it rebuilt.
