How many people in here have swaps and actually went through the state patrol for all the little paperwork you have to do for having a different motor in your car?
What kind of work is involved and is there really any point in doing it?

My question is even if you have a legit motor then isn't it illegal to have it inside of the car without going through the state patrol?
The reason I ask is because I just bought a JDM B18B from a place that imports motors. They will be giving me all the reciepts and all that of course, but the JDM motors dont have VIN plates or anything. I don't want to get pulled over and then have a cop look under my hood and see that there are no vin plates and think its a stolen motor then send my **** to impound.
I just want to know what is the "right". Way to do everything in order to avoid all of this. I also imagine this would make insurance go higher and ****. I just wanna know about it all

Never thought about my swap being illegal. y8 head on y7 block, z6 tranny. The only aftermarket mod I can think of having is the apexi power intake stuck into a stock si intake arm...I'm also in WA state.

The only way around it is to
1) Dont drive like an *** and get pulled over.
2) get BAR'd. Once youre at the Ref station, the ref doesnt care if it doesnt have the vin plate or not. Once you get the BAR certificate, there is no mention of the engine VIN anywhere. That is what leads me to believe the vin plate is not important. As long as you have receipts showing you purchased the engine from a legitimate seller, then you should be fine.

I guess smog only exists in California then. "Smog" is a term coined by environmentalists and the California government. It is a mixture of the two words "Smoke" and "Fog." When the particulate matter spewing out of our exhausts float into the atmosphere, it mixes with the fog.... thus creating a brownish haze that we all in California love so dearly = SMOG.
Since there are so many cars in CA, the government has decided to be **** about our emissions in order to save the environment. Therefore, the govt implements a rule that for cars over 5yrs old (i think) must get their cars "smog checked" every other year to ensure that there are no "gross polluters" roaming the streets of CA, and killing off tiny birds in their wake. Im sure all states have some sort of emissions restriction program (except for Utah and Texas apparently
) just not as bad as CA.

yeah man when I went to california it was filthy (the air). Especially even in the farm lands you can see off into the horizon a brown layer
as long as you have paper work you should be fine. the lieutenant that lives down the street from me told me as long as i obtain a bill of sale from the person selling the motor i should be safe. get all the person's info (i.e. license #, full name, address, phone #, vin# if possible, date of purchase, amount purchasing for, etc.) it'll save some headaches from the ignorant or ***** officers if you get your car bar'd but it isn't necessary unless they send you to the state ref themselves.
I know plenty of people that have swaps that don't have their cars bar'd. my neighbor got pulled over and the officer found out that he had a swap but since the motor wasn't reported stolen at the time he let him go.

man, i dont like talking to pigs so i just thought you guys might be able to help. I called state patrol vehicle inspection office before but they gave me the run-around and i gave up.
The motor i'm buying is from a real business. http://www.jdmimportsdirect.com and they're going to give me reciepts w/ all the information and serial numbers. I guess I could just keep a copy in my glove box...
