Anyone rockin' the ol' D-lop Direzza DZ101?
I'm looking at a good daily-driver tire for my girlfriend's '99 Integra. She doesn't drive too crazy, so I want to grab a higher-milage hi-po tire wtih exceptional hydroplaning resistance for a fairly economical price (PLUS with a $50 rebate). I saw these tires on http://www.tirerack.com and they look pretty decent. I'm totally up for suggestions. Thanks, Dudes.
These just came out so I wouldn't be calling them "ol". But, at any rate, they're more of a performance tire on par with and even surpassing such tires as the Yoko ES100, the Kumho Ectsa MX, and et al.
With a 300 tread rating, they'll last a while but not too long. I don't know if I'd get 'em thinking you can slap them on and forget them.
I'd read the reviews on TireRack if I were you, seeing as how the highest mileage review is 5000 miles.
BTW, I have these tires but have yet to mount them.

If I were looking for an economical high-performance tire and the Dunlop Direzza DZ-101 came in the size I were looking for, I'd buy them. In fact, they'd probably be my first choice.

Actually, the Dunlop Direzza DZ-101 is a "budget performance" tire, for people who want some decent performance at a great price. In that respect, it competes with the Yokohama ES100 and the Kumho Ecsta SPT (Kumho's new entry in this segment, replacing their 712 tire), but not the Kumho Ecsta MX, which is Kumho's top-of-the-line tire and is somewhat more expensive.
They don't come in the size that Tire Rack uses for testing, so there's no side-by-side comparison test on them. I don't put much faith in the reviews on their site because there's a built-in bias in terms of what kind of person buys them and for what kind of car.
Matt (Neo79Si) has reported that they're really terrific. Okay, so he has reason to be biased. But he's also very knowledgeable about tires, and I trust what he says.
I think they're a great choice. Remember, that $50 rebate is only good through this coming Saturday...

Definately. I agree with you there. I had a major brain fart and couldn't remember the name of Kumho's new tire. The MX was the first thing to come to mind.
I've also had the MX's and they are a superb tire.
My only concern with the DZ-101's is the tread life. I know with proper alignment and camber settings that they'll get a good amount of life out of them. BUT, these are going on a daily driver that might see spirited highway runs every now and then... if that. And I just think that he should look at a more "lasting" tire.
Caveat: It is his money after all, he can buy whatever the hell he wants.

Ken is right, I'm an engineer for Dunlop so it's possible that I am a little biased...but the Direzza is actually a great tire - I've driven them myself and gotten feedback from people that we sponsor...everyone I've talked to has been impressed!

I agree - an alignment is much more important than the type of driving you do. I've driven the Direzza's on an auto-x style course on our test track for 90+ mins in a small group. The tires held up very well, stayed predictable, and showed minimal wear. That's why everyone loves them so much for drifting. I guess I would say I'm not too worried about some spirited driving wearing them out very quickly.

For a daily driver on an integra...the Direzza's are ideal. I think you'll be very happy with them...and w/the rebate...how can you afford not to buy them??
Let us know how they work out for you...if you have more questions please let me know!
Thanks,
Matt

I disagree. I don't know why you apparently think they won't last a long time. From everything I've seen, they should last as long as any other tire in this segment. In fact, that's one of the good things about this "budget performance" segment - most tires do last quite a long time (leaving aside a few obvious exceptions such as the Falken Azenis RT-215 and RT-615 and the Hankook RS2 Z212).
The treadwear ratings aren't always accurate, and are even less accurate when compared between different brands, as we've previously discussed here numerous times. That being said, the Yokohama ES100 has a 280 treadwear rating, and it lasts a VERY long time. The set on my GS-R looks like they will last for around 35K miles, maybe longer, which is great, much much longer than the other tires I've used on that car (Michelin XGT-V4, Dunlop SP9000, Bridgestone RE010). The treadwear rating on the Direzza DZ101 is 300, which is even higher than the ES100. Furthermore, since the ES100 is the standard in this segment that (I'm quite sure but admittedly conjecture on my part) the tire designers/engineers were using as a basis of comparison, I'd bet money that they made sure that these new entries in this segment last at least as long. Maybe not as long as some rock-hard all-season tires made for family sedans, but as long as any decent performance tire.
Obviously, get whatever tire you want. But if you get the Direzza DZ101, I'm betting you'll find that it lasts quite a long time, many many miles.
I know a little bit about tires. And my advice remains the same:

I got them.....
haven't driven on them in the hatch yet, but they have been on my wifes car for about 2 months now.
so far i like them better then the ES100's (my wife use to have them)
tread life is supposed to be better then ES100's too so if that holds true i'll be a loyal direzza guy for a while.

I've also received very positive feedback from my customers on this tire. Seems to be really good wet traction and handling capability. And for the price point how can you go wrong? Let me know if you are interested in ordering them. Thanks.

I have been driving on a set for the past two months, and so far so good. The tires are very predictable with fairly high limits for a budget performance tire, which makes them pretty "easy" and assuring to drive spiritedly on. Wet traction is very good as well as long as you stay within reason of course. I would definitely recommend them as a performance daily driver tire. For the price, they can't be beat.

$45.50 + 36 bucks for shipping! Shoot, back when I was your age tires were a dang ol' nickle apiece, Man, dang.
Just joshin. A guy's gotta make sure he gets the best price, right?
Cheap is good, but cheaper is better! You could be eating the best filet mignon (or pu55y) on the planet, but it would be even better if it were FREE!

i've had them for about four months now and i love them.
the wet traction is very good. i haven't pushed them very hard in the rain but from what i have done, i can tell you that they're good enough for wet driving. i've autocrossed with them once, and the dry grip was outstanding for a 'budget' performance tire. didnt even hit a cone or lose control that day haha..my car actually oversteered a couple times which was surprising but i kept control and the tires did a great job. anyways, for daily driving i drive pretty hard and the front tires are starting to show a decent amount of wear, especially close to the sidewall. i'm thinking they will last me at least another year. they are pretty quiet and ride smoothly. all in all a great tire for a daily driver.

Yeah, we would definitely appreciate you posting a review on http://www.tirerack.com. We love any feedback we can get on the tires.
Unfortunately no discounts beyond the $50 mail in rebate currently being offered. I appreciate you asking though. I can understand someone trying to get the best price possible. Nothing wrong with that.
