Maybe a Newb question, but is it possible to replace springs/retainers without pulling the head?

I figured as long as you do each cylinder with the piston in that cylinder at TDC, then you won't drop the valve, right?

Forgive my ignorance if this is just way off base ......

yes.......a special spring compressor will be required just for that purpose.

I always use an air compressor to pressurize the chamber in addition to having the piston at TDC...

I managed to do the job without any special tools but it was a pain in the ***. You might want to buy a couple of retainer locks (little half cone locking the retainer to the valve stem) at your nearest Acura dealer. If you loose one (like droping it on the floor and spending a hour trying to find it ) your going to feel a little bit helpless.
Make sure you put the springs right side up (tight winding at the bottom) (in case you didn't know).

Cool, thanks guys!

I pick up my engine/tranny this weekend, and I already have the Portflow inners, and Type R outers and retainers (yeah, I know, overkill for the B16 cams, but I'm just getting prepared for running hotter cams in the somewhat near future).
