hmm.... any ideas?
ok, so i just bought my '98 type R a few months ago. about a month after i had it, i decided to take the airbox off. (i guess that's what you call it, the piece that sits down in front of the right front tire that connects to the stock air intake and makes it quiet.) when i did that, i noticed a small whistling noise in the lower rpms when it wasn't at full throttle. yesterday i got my car back from the body shop (this freakin' old lady dented my left front quarter panel!
) and i decided to put on my AEM CAI that i ordered while it was in the shop. so, i get it all bolted on and i notice that the air bypass hose is too short. it says in the manual that it's supposed to be 10". so i measure it and it is. however it doesn't fit. i had a piece of red hose, made by hose techniques i believe, that my friend left over at my house. so i put that on in place of it. i figured it would work since that air bypass hose only has a small vacuum on it to release pressure from the head. well, i got it all on, started it up. and it sounds sooo sweet! however, in the lower rpms, it's now making a really loud whistling noise? has anybody else experienced these problems w/ the whisthing and the air bypass hose being to short? my car isn't andy griffith, i don't think it's supposed to be whistling. thanks for any help!

u said the whistling noise is normal... well, what do u call normal? cuz this is a really loud whistling noise. oh yea, and they say when u instal the cold air, if you have a/c, which i do, i know it's gay, that you have to bend the a/c hoses. has anybody had to do this?
Whistling at certain throttle positions is very, very noticeable. Passengers will ask "What the ***** is that noise?" Then you slap them around and burn their clothes.
A/C line interference is minor - easiest solution is to zip-tie the two A/C lines together to move the front-most one away from the AEM piping. Some have ground out the lower AEM bracket to reposition it. There are creative ways to keep rubbing to a minimum, just get in there and play around a little bit.

so the whistling is going to be very noticable? and there's nothing i can do about it? where is it coming from, the filter? oh yea, thanks for the info on the a/c lines!
I believe the whistling is just resonation in the pipe. You'll get used to it. If not, put the stock intake tract back on.
But no, short of taking the AEM off, there's nothing to be done.

Get used to it. I've come to like my whistling. Sometimes I just leave the throttle in a certain position and it just goes and goes.
I don't think there is anything you can do. I think the sound comes from the air entering the filter because I just cleaned my filter and it whistles like new again.

lol, whistles like new again, eh? gotta love that whistle. i drove around a bit today during my lunch break w/ the throttle at whistle position. i think i can get used to it.
cuz, it's definantly worth keepin the CAI on to have that undescribeable sound when u hit vtec.
