Default Drag Noob

Bare with me. Asked A similar question on jdmcivic.com but this seems like a better place. My names Andy from the UK. The import scene is nothing like the US, and we lag way behind in terms of innovation. People just arnt wiling to open up to certain ideas. The biggest being the use of FWD civics as drag cars, which U seem to have amazing success with.
After a recent event in the UK, I've decided to start gathering info. My idea is to buy a cheap example of a b16a engined eg hatch. And from there work up slowly, gaining experience and knowledge. So I'd like a little feedback and maybe a little direction if thats ok.

My initial plans for the car include a stage one, 'bolt on and weight reduction'. Bolt on's being a decent header, and exhaust system and a proper cold air box induction system with a headlight air feed. Maybe uprated sparkplugs and leads. I'm hoping this set-up with give me 20bhp over the standard 160bhp. I.e, 180 at the flywheel. I hope from a initial performance point of view this will be a decent enough platform to start with. Obviously an uprated clutch will be used also, and a jap spec LSD.

From there I will remove all unnecessary interior, seats, dash, carpets, sound deadeneing, trim etc etc.

I'm assuming fibreglass panels like bonnet, wings, rear hatch etc will be cheaper than carbon fibre?

And plastic windows all round to?

From there it will be a case of learning about suspension settings, spring rates, weight distribution. What tyre pressures to run, what fuel to use(we have 99octane at the pumps) Decent size and manufacturer of slicks.

Everyone has to start somewhere, and this will be a second car, a hobby car. Something I can mess around with at weekends and done on a budget with zero knowledge of drag racing. I'm not talking $$$$$£££££ turbo'd, sponser'd 9 sec monsters or anything.

Apologys if u get this s**t all the time, its just something I really fancy and wud be grateful of all your thoughts. I'm hoping for mid 13's with this basic beginner set-up????

Kind regards

Andy

sounds good but. i'd get a better motor...b18, or even kseries........i not sure if you'd run 13's with that set up maybe high 14's low 15's..... with k series stock you'd run 12's for sure even b-series would get you down to low 14's.....

Hi mate, thanks for the reply. I have a jdm dc2 on the way from Japan, ETA 5 weeks so I wudnt do the 1800motor. The first swap to enter my head was a turbo'd K-series, as this is becoming a very popular mod with EP3's and DC5's in the UK. But as its a project/hobby I want to build up slowly, to me it makes it more meaningful, and I think I'll learn a lot more.
Just out of curiosity, wot could the car weigh, or wot could I get it down to.

Thanks

well since you dont want to do lots of internal mods or turbo/nitrous you might want to think about a h22. There pretty cheap and with driving experience you can get mid 13's with just the stock h22 with full interior.

The H22 engine in the uk is quite a rarity. The only car that had them in any great quantities was the Prelude. Although I remember an eg with one transplanted and it did a 5 sec 0-60 mph !! Never thought about that swap, I suppose it wud be cheaper than a K-series. Thanks for that, food for thought.
My main priority is gettin the car stripped out, looking the part with lightweight parts and panels. I suppose I just have to get out and practice after that!!
It just p**ses me off that that the drag scene in the UK is so lame, and the import scene not much better. If i prevale with this it will be a rare sight on the strip!

Gonna have to look into where I can get lightweight body panels and glass

lightness will only take you so far, the power has to be there also. I guess i'm just different cause i'm in the us(cali) and am used to seeing 11-13sec all motor street cars with interior and panels still intact.
