97 Civic Hatch:
-96 Spec ITR engine
-Exedy stage 1 clutch
-98 spec ITR 4-1 header

My friends and I were at the track last Friday (Cecil) and my one friend messed his tranny up. He said he shifted into 4th and it popped back out so, he pushed in the clutch and threw it back into 4th and coasted across the line. He ran it conservatively a few more times and noticed a noise he didn't have before. I checked it out while he was sitting in the pit area but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. After we get home (1-1/2 hr. drive), he asked me to go for a ride with him because he said his car was making a whining noise. I jumped in and he started to drive and I heard the noise right away. It's definitely a whining noise that gets louder as the RPMs go up. I'm not really sure what he did or what he messed up. He said it still shifted fine and everything and he didn't have any problems on the trip back.

Anybody else have a similar problem with their tranny? What did you do to fix it? Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

 

does it do it at idle?
if so; does it go away when clutch is pressed?
does it immediately stop or coasts down?

 

It sounds fine at idle and the main bearings are OK. It just sounds like a straight cut gear, like reverse...just not that loud. It makes this noise throughout the RPM range and it gets louder as you climb through the RPMs.
