97 GSR ticks alot and sounds real rough when cold
I have a 97 GSR it ticks alot and is really loud when its cold i just had the valves adjusted but still sounds real rough any ideas or does anyone esles GSR sound this rough? Motor only has 55,000 miles on it and only a AEM intake any ideas why it ticks so loud?
i was noticing my 98 GSR does the same. It has 40k and I don't know if the valves were ever adjusted so I'm gonna have that done, I was also going to try Redline oil. Maybe that will work. Mine isn't really loud, but it's louder than any other car I've owned. For now I just keep the stereo up to help ignore it.
I have the same problem on my 96RS. I just had the valves adjusted so I am guessing its not that.
I have herd that it might be that there is enough carbon on the the heads that it is coming in contact with the cylinder walls, and when it warms up everything expands slightly so they no longer touch.

Could you describe this better please?
Feel the valve cover over each valve pair for vibrations, possibly to determine which valve set or bank of valves it is.
Listen to the header and see if you can determine which cylinder it is.
Also when does it happen? At idle until the car warms up? During load until the car warms up? Only under 2000 RPM? etc. . .
*Have you had your timing belt replaced recently? (It may be stretched)
Have you advanced your timing?
When is the last time you checked your plugs?
maybe there is a clue here. . . .

Its probably your valves or timing belt. If one of the 16 valves has a gap bigger then specs it will tick tick tick. Also if your timing belt is old or loose it could cause a ticking noise. I just did my valve job last weekend and my car stopped ticking and gained some power. It's not that hard to do. I would say on a difficulty level of 10 its a 3.

The ticking problem. I have a 98 GSR and it's doing the same thing. I've had the valves adjusted and it's not that. I can't tell where it's coming from...the top or the bottom of the head. I'm almost thinking it's a rocker arm. Not sure though. I just bought the car and someone put some money into it but in some places didn't do a very good job. Plus, didn't take care of it. I'm giving it's much need TLC.
