Well its all done and I'm very happy with the results. Complete is a Stage 2 package from TK MOTION. I bet I'm not going to be giddy and anxious to install it!

Your an idiot! Don't you think if he wanted a Vtec head he would of bought one? I don't think he spent all of the money on the LS head for nothing.

Everyones like, oh, just get VTEC, well i say if you want a non-VTEC motor, go for it! I have VTEC and love it, but its cool to be different for the non-VTEC peeps!!

Why did you not want them to rip out the valve guides for maximum porting. You could always have them replaced with bronze valve guides.

FrostyDC4: Thanks man, I can't wait to get the car on a dyno let alone just install the thing! I will definately post results once the project is done.

94goldjungsr: Uhm well I guess others answered your reply, but anyway, a nice way of putting it is that I did all this work for people like you.

I had a budget and had to draw the line somewhere. If I got the guides removed, it would have brought me to the next stage of porting + new guides. If I was going all out I would have also gotten Ferrea valves!

I deburred one of my old LS heads before porting and man did I get the worst one that ever came out of the casting plant, there was so much casting sand in the oil galleries and all tight corners, you wont notice the difference but just know that you now have better oil control / flow back to the pan.
P.S. they should have put an oxidation inhibiting oil in the rocker pivots, noticed a bit of rust there.

nice head

i didnt say "just get a vtec head" for no reason. Val, hx_guy, who lives down the street from me, put a ton of money in his non_vtec "f vtec" setup. Well.. with big compression, forged rods in his b20, with a beefed up b20 head with 404s and a big header... val did pretty well on the dyno. He then paid a little cash, sold his 404s and his b20 head... turned around and bought a vtec head and i gave him my type r cams. Moral of the story, it cost him like 200 or 300$ to do the vtec conversion... and here's the cross over of his two dynos:

verdict? ill take the blue line.

AllmotorDC2: Thanks! I was in no rush whatsoever and specified I only needed it by march. Overall it took about 3-4 weeks with me saying "take your time, I'm in no rush". Mind you visiting the shop to checkout the progress on a day to day basis could have sped things up

alexboy: I didn't choose a skunk2 IM mostly because of budget, and to somewhat save any low end I could for now with the longer runners.

94goldjungsr: I am going to be going b20 down the line and followed val's progress, and I can highly bet that he could have gotten at least another 20hp with good porting on his non vtec setup. Thats the one thing he was missing big time. Don't get me wrong, porting a vtec head will probably add yet another 10-15hp on his setup, but theres a reason why crower & crane all specify that a ported head is necessary when using 404's.

rtype: I noticed the rust, I was too excited to clean it off before hand. It came off simply by wiping it with my finger.

Ah, but...

for less than the cost of the porting you could convert to a vtec head... and make the same power. Plus... no more annoying idle, smell, and worsened gas milage. A ltitle variable valve timing never hurt...

Hows that? The porting cost me roughly the price of a decent vtec head with STOCK valvetrain. Nonvtec crower cams are much cheaper than even a set of CTR or ITR cams, I'd then need machine work, a new IM (at that point might as well get an ITR), I'd also need an ECU, and it'd be quite useless if I didn't get a GSR or Si tranny to go along with it. Then I'm still driving on a block that can't take 8000-8500rpm, which will be a little useless considering thats where a vtec engine is really designed to make its peak hp. Add the price of a girdle, balanced crank & rods, etc, and its totally not in the same ball park.

i'm just curious as to why you chose crane valve springs and retainers over crowers?

asside from that everything looks great!!

About $80-$100 + taxes, (over $150 in CAN), and when I still need a heck of a lot more work on the car, I opted for the Cranes
