Power to Weight is the biggest factor, I also like them because they are small, and cheap.

They aren't as exspensive or in as much demand as EG's.
They have a boxier body style that I like more than post '91 hatchbacks bodystyles.
Mugen MR5's look awesome on EF's.
They are light as hell and parts are cheaper.

*The 80's styling. The 90's brought on swoopy lines and dulling of the sharp angles that was so prevalent in the 80's. To me, the dash and the cluster [along with the whole car] is cooler than in any of the new civics. There's something that's just gangsta about driving the oldest car out of all your friends.
*The feasibility. These cars are still prevalent, in good shape, and relatively inexpensive. I got my sedan for $1500 and my hatch for $950. Neither have any kind of serious damage to them.
*Ease of swapping. Generally the older the civic, the lighter the chassis. The problem with civics older than 88 though is the difficulty with doing performance swaps. There is enough aftermarket support out there for the 88-91 crowd to allow cometition to keep the price of components down for us.

1) Its a Honda
2) Its light. That means its faster in every aspect.
3) Swaps are easy
4) The front end looks agressive and kickass
5) Its got super cargo room for a hatchback
6) For under 5k (with mods), your not gonna find a car that can pull over 1 lateral G
