Default SFWD guys - torque steer

For all you SFWD/T3 guys, how bad is your torque steer when going down the 1/4?

My car seem to rip to the right HARD... I usually have to hold the steering wheel anywhere from 90 degrees to 45 degrees to the left to go straight (usually, 90 degrees for the first 1/8 and it gets gradually less until the end of the 1/4 where its held around 45 degrees).

I've changed axles, I have great alignment settings (I got it aligned the day of my last race), I tried 2 different wheel/slick combo's.... I'm beginning to wonder if that's just the nature of the beast....

Anyone else care to divulge how stright your car goes down the 1/4? Do you have to tilt the steering wheel to stay straight?

My car was way bad last year with the open diff. I knew it was scrubing off some time so that was one of the first things I wanted to fix for the 2005 season. How does it drive on the street.?

I'm supposedly running a quaife... although I bought the tranny with the diff in it and I haven't pulled the diff out to verify (although I'm 100% sure it does have an LSD).

It drives fine on the street... it feels like it pulls slightly to the right on the regular street tires. It definitely pulls harder to the right with the nitto drag radials, and as soon as I slap on the slicks it gets much worse.

It seems that the pull gets significantly worse as I put on wider tires. Do you think my diff could be in question?

I've also noticed that if your tire pressure is not exactly equal in both tires it will pull really hard in one direction. This is where a good tire guage comes in handy.

It does sound like a bushing problem. It is probably something you cant see but when its being loaded it will flex.

I replaced all the bushings with new energy suspension ones to try and correct this problem.... it definitely felt better to drive, but it still didn't fix the pulling. uglyasscivic, does your cal pull at all now that you got a better diff?

have you tried a set of traction bars? maybe someone whos car isnt currently running will lend you a set. that will atleast elliminate any lower control arm issues.

also how about ball joints/steering rack/tie rod ends?

I've had this problem twice. Once when I was on an open diff, the other when I had a busted mount, this misaligning the axles.

The balljoints seem fine (no play in them), and the car held its alignment settings perfectly between the last 2 alignments I had (~1.5 months apart). I have not done any steering rack work/inspection/etc... would the fact that the alignment settings have held true indicate that the steering rack/tie rod ends are AOK?

I think traction bars would be a good idea... I'll try to get some of those soon.

Does this mean that all you other SFWD guys' cars track perfectly down the 1/4?

Once I aligned the car properly and set the toe 1/8" in and -1deg camber i never had another problem. how is your rear alignment?

I have the rear toe straight and the camber is a little negative I believe (I'd have to check again).

I've got +4 castor, -.5 camber and 1/8" total toe in all up front

i by no means have the power you guys have, in the t4 class. but from my own exoperience i can say that, the only time i have had this problem it has been slick related(slow leak). but i would tell you to open up the tranny, and check your clearances on the diff! check if it was shimmed, to the appropiate specs!

Torque steer can happen from a number of things, but from my own experiences,my differential was causing the torque steer in my car,i was originally using a Kaaz dif, which is a clutch type dif.It steered just as bad as you are explaining, after i broke the first one i had another in the shop, put it in and same thing.Bought a spool and no more torque steer.
This season went from spoool to Quaife and car still straight as a arrow.
Check your dif just to be certain.......
