Question for those that have done track days...
Regarding the beginner groups, how is the pace and structure? Are you thrown to the wolves and allowed to ride at your own pace or do the control riders keep a tight reign over the group? I saw a group at VIR this weekend and the pace for the beginner group seemed pretty mellow and riders didnt seem to get in over their heads (I feel that's a good thing). So basically I'm trying to get some feedback from people that have actually done them. Thanks

Beginner group is just that......... a beginner group, nobody wants or expects you to haul a$$, most beginner groups only allow passing on the outside and in the straights (some only allow passing in the straights, it depends on the organization). No matter what group your in, you should be going your own pace anyway, some people just have a faster pace than others
. I know that if you go through http://www.fastrackriders.com, for your very first time, they put you in the novice group and you are put with an instructor for the day (something like 5-6 riders per instructor). It's good because that way you can learn the lines of the track.

When I did my first track day I started in the beginner group and some of them were really slow. Pretty much as long as you know how to ride and can go at least freeway speeds then you'll be ok in the beginner group. While you're there try and see who the sketchy riders are and stay away from them.
