Default Engine/exhaust sounds different after valve adjustment (H22)...

Not really any problems as the car seems to run/drive fine but the engine sound has definately changed (deeper). And a few times its given that exhaust sound that you would hear out of exhaust modded Sti's for example at part throttle (kind of like a gargling sound...hard to explain!). Are turbo motors typically retarded timing wise? Is this what produces that sound or just the turbo itself?.

The valves were all loose (using 7 intake 8 exhaust). Maybe they are too tight now?

I still have minimal valve train noise (maybe just because I have aftermarket cams?) though.

BTW, it's more difficult adjusting H22 valves than the B20/B21 on 3rd gens (w/o that special tool anyway)!

So my question is, why am I getting this new/weird sound?

Anyone have any input?

I want to make sure that I'm getting the same tuned power (not messing up my tune after adjusting the valves...doesn't make sense but i want to make sure...).

I don't know about the part throttle noise but the exhaust note was noticably deeper even with stock cams. I set mine on the tight side 5 in 6 ex

Tighter clearances at the cam will produce more lift and duration at the valve. More lift and more duration changes the breathing of the engine slightly. It probably increased your overlap too depending on how much you tightened it.

With my nonVTEC H23 Hybrid I recently went from .006 IN and .008 EX to .004/.006 clearance and now my idle is shot below 1000 rpm where it used to burble pretty well at 850 rpm. Due to the H22A's rocker ratio .001 tighter clearance change at the cam makes .00155 more lift at the valve. The rocker ratio for the H23 is even greater which explains the development of my recent idle issue.

So yes, your part throttle gurgle can definately be casued by tightening your valves and can affect your tune.

Hmmm, more lift so more air? That's cool. I feel confident that my adjustments are good. I rechecked them everytime after I tightened that 10mm nut so they where still in spec.

I need to do my breathing mods and do a retune.

Sounds nice though! It was deep to begin with and now even deeper and I kind of like that "gurgle"! Sounds cool!
