weird noise from engine...

weird noise from engine...potential transmission problem?
i have a 96 hatch and ran into a recent problem. when i'm in first gear and and reach about 2000 rpm, it makes a scratching noice, almost like a vtech noise. when i'm in the other gears, it makes a similiar sound but more of a hollow rattling noise.
i took it to honda and the guy said it was my transmission. i'm guessing maybe the bearing in my transmission? or could it be as simple as putting in transmission fluid? anyone have this problem or know what it could be?
