How to set up ignition&fuel for D16Z2('91 SOHC non-vtec) racing engine?
Hi guys, can anyone give me advice how to set up ECU in this case? I'll tell you the whole story.
I'm one of very few people in Czech Republic that can tune Honda ECUs using EGT, WBO2 etc, so one of the small, national rally racing teams, asked me for assistance in tuning their N-class(almost stock) Civic'91 with SOHC engine.
Their setup is :
- lowered head( 1 mm)
- stage 2 valves that were milled as well to allow more air&fuel in
- racing 102 octanes fuel
- racing exhaust&intake
everything else on the engine is stock.
According to this setup I thought I'll just add some more fuel( as milled head also allows to enter more air in), and mostly change only the ignition timing. But according to a measurement of WBO2, the AFR was from 11,2 to 10,5 on WOT (4k to 7k RPM) with STOCK fuel map!!! I changed(advanced) the timing to meet the needs of the 102oct fuel(no pinging), that seems to add some Hp but the AFR change was insignificant.
Can anyone help me where I should start here?

... just if anyone is interrested to know the solution....
When you lower the head, the CAMS timing changes as well.... the cams timing was incorrect so there was simply not enough air coming in. Luckily this car had adjustable cam gear, so I simply corrected the timing( you need to set first cylinder to its top position, and then adjust cams to have intake/exhaust valves on the fourts cylinder in the SAME level of opening).
Then I started to tune it, but no matter what I did, EVEN WITH STOCK ECU, the car went like **** until 4k RPM... and WBO showed some f*cking lean AFR until 4k. I enriched the fuel map( PM6 pasted into SINGLE map NG60 rom), but it didn't help at all. After playing with it for a while, and using Ecucontrol, I found out that ECU is reading column 1,1 bar that should be in FORCED INDUCTION PART of the fuel map instead of the -0,3 column, which is the last column in the naturally aspirated fuel map !!! Probably some f*cked MAP sensor... So I changed the setting of the map from NA to FI, pasted -0,3 column content into 1,1(fuel&timing as well, of course), and ALL WAS PERFECT.
I'm really curious what values did it actually read on stock ecu that was never chipped, as the car was really going terrible even on this stock one.
After this little incident I just corrected ignition timing and tuned AFR according to WBO2, and yesterday we dynoed it. 104 Kw( 142 hp), non-turbo.
Not bad as the engine has only 110 hp stock and definitely not all the upgrades had been done already. Expected bhp is at approx 160-170 with all the changes planned.
