Default best tires ??

My cousin owns a tire shop, and can get me tires at wholesale, so price is not a concern, I dont know wich tires to get. I want a performance tire thats sticky and corners good and has very high tread rating. i was set on toyo ra-1 until i found out they dont make them in 205/40/16

Suggestions??

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by torqueless &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I want a performance tire thats sticky and corners good and has very high tread rating. i was set on toyo ra-1 until i found out they dont make them in 205/40/16</TD></TR></TABLE>

I don't understand why you would be considering the RA-1. The RA-1 is a track tire, which means that it wears out a lot quicker than street tires do. You said you cared about high tread rating, presumably meaning you care how long they last.

Incidentally, FWIW, the Toyo RA-1 was originally sold with a 60 treadwear rating. Recently they changed it to a 100 treadwear rating. I have confirmed with Toyo representatives that they didn't change the tire at all, they only found that the higher treadwear rating was appropriate.

In any case, the RA-1 isn't really suitable to your stated needs. Neither is the Falken RT-615, which is another super-sticky but fast-wearing tire. The other two tires you mentioned aren't all that great in terms of performance.

You are correct that there aren't a lot of 205/40-16 tires on the market. There are two that I would consider: the Kumho ECSTA SPT, at $79/tire at the Tire Rack, will outperform most of the other "bang for the buck" "budget performance" tires (like the Nitto NeoGen or the Yoko Parada Spec). If you want slightly better performance than that, then you might try the BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW 2 at $126/tire.

However, as noted in that other topic, the 205/45-16 is a much better size for your car than the 205/40-16, because its outer diameter is closest to stock for your Civic. There are LOTS more tires available in 205/45-16 that would be great for your needs. If you're really looking for a great-performing, reasonably long-lasting tire in that size, a terrific choice is the Goodyear F1 GS-D3, at $128/tire. This is an outstanding top-of-the-line tire that beat the Bridgestone S-03 in Tire Rack testing, which is a major accomplishment. It will easily out-perform any of the tires available in 205/40-16. And it will last a lot longer than a track tire or than the Falkens. (The treadwear rating on the F1 GS-D3 is 280.) If you are looking for a sticky, great-handling tire that will also give you decent treadlife, that's the tire to get.

There are some other decent tires in 205/45-16, including the BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW 2 and Kumho Ecsta SPT tires mentioned for the 205/40-16, as well as the Fuzion ZRi and the Yokohama ES100. But all of these tires are "budget performance" tires, that are designed to offer decent performance at a bargain price. You say you don't care about price, and you're looking for the best performance around. Then get the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 in 205/45-16. It's one of the very best street tires around, and comes in the proper size for your car, too.
