I have a 5-speed '02 Coupe with the ULEV 4-cylinder, 26,000mi, no modifications of any kind. In my first week of driving I did a mix of highway and city, probably stuck in traffic for 10% of my highway miles. I got just over 30mpg taking it easy. This past weekend I did nearly 400 highway miles on 10.6 gallons of gas! The exact numbers worked out to 36.8mpg at speeds between 55 and 80mph. It might have broken 37 if not for some small pockets of traffic at the tolls and one construction site.
ummmmm......WTF! *damit* mine's da same gen with same f23 engine and everything with intake and exhaust and has 30k miles on it. it gets like 17mpg (18 max if im lucky) in the city. how do u calculate ur mpg? help please.

All I'm doing is filling the tank all the way, resetting the trip meter, and then next time I fill up I record the mileage and the number of gallons it takes to max-out the tank again. Divide that mileage by the number of gallons and you have your average fuel economy. I do this every time I gas up.
It could be that you drive in different conditions than I do, drive harder than I do, or maybe it has something to do with the ULEV engine. (The engineers at Honda could have used lower fuel consumption as one means of achieving lower emissions.)
It could be something about your car that you can fix, too. Proper tire inflation is extremely important, as is keeping the car in good tune. You might want to check for a dragging brake caliper, which would put a higher load on the engine. One wheel that gets hotter than the others after long-ish drive would be an indication.

Everyone is going to have different results. If you look at previous threads about gas mileage, people ranged anywhere from around 17-32mpg. My '99 gets about 23-24mpg nearly every tank, with mixed city and highway driving. 2.5 hour trips at a constant speed of 70mph usually gets me about 31mpg. When my foot gets heavy around town I get as low as 20.
When my cousin had her '00, she never got anything lower than 28, and got as high as 34.
There are so many things that affect gas mileage... How you accelerate, how you break, city vs highway vs mixed, how many uphill and downhill sections of road you drive on, etc.... I could go on for a while.
