a few noob questions (insurance, costs..etc)
ok guys, i have been saving money and got a great few jobs to pay for my bike (beside from my trust fund
) but i have now enrolled in my msf course for september and yada yada yada. but now the questions
1.) can anyone give me a rough estimate for insurance costs. i have called a few places but they want exact data like bike vins and plate numbers and such but i dont have a bike yet. i am 99% positive i will be getting a 600 either honda, yamaha, suzuki.
25yrs old, pretty clean record, no moving violations in like 3-4 years, 600 sport bike
2.) average matinence costs of a bike (similar to a car?)
3.) gear costs, is the more expensive helmet better or is just the name, like a $200 helmet vs a $400 helmet
4.) gear sizing, cuz im probably going mail order so i wont get to try it on. how do they fit, i think i have an odd shaped body
thanks for your time. i have done my research and think i will be ready

1) Insurace all depends on who you call. Some people (such as myself) get quoted $8000/year, while some are only $43/month. It also depends on if you want liability, theft, full coverage, etc.
2) maintenance .. ehh, i think it costs more then a car would for normal maintenance, seeing as motorcycle specific products seem to be more expensive, and alot of people push their machines pretty hard so they change the oil more often, always lube the chain, etc.
3) helmet .. go to any reputable store such as cycle gear, and ANY helmet they have there is safe, as they have to meet DOT standards, as well as some companies meeting more then just the DOT standards. Are they safer? I dont know. There was a big article in a magazine not too long ago alllll about helmets, i have it around here somewhere but am too lazy to find it. First, not all brands fit the same, so find something comfortable. As for brands, i'd trust KBC, Shoei, Arai, AGV and Suomy ... anything other then that, i just dont know enough about.
4) gear sizing .. BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING .. find a shop, and try it on. Your gear will not work like it's supposed to, if it doesn't even fit you properly. Find a local Cycle Gear, or any other Cali retailer, and TRY IT ON.
Good luck with everything bro
And make sure you have money for all the gear you need ... at least a good jacket, gloves, and a good helmet .. if not having pants and boots

go to progressive.com, i am in your same situation, except I am getting a loan from my parents and just waiting to turn 18 so i can get a bike. My insurance was like 670 a year, for liability only for a 2002 cbr600rr. that's what i said my bike was, even though i don't own one just to get a good idea.
Goodluck

to get an accurate quote, it would help if you gave them a bike actually in production, and not something you made up

there was no 2002 600RR. so there is noway it can be an accurate quote. And yes the RR's are under the "supersport" class when it comes to insurance.

I dont believe there is a "superbike" category when it comes to insurance. It just falls under the big unbrella of "sportbike".
Fortunately, they dont have my bike on any insurance's database so my agent got it insured as a VFR750 (sport touring)
as for maintenance, tires every 2-5k miles, valve adjustments about every 16k, and lots of little maintenance things every 4k
