it's the cable sticking, the return spring stuck, or a problem in your nest of vacuum lines. could be an internal carb leak, too.

Damn, THe leak sounds bad. I checked under neath the vavle cover and it's in awesome condition. This car has been sitting at least year maybe 1 1/2 tops with start, so this is something i didn't expect. I will be sure to check those things out.

it is not a vacc leak carb cars they ren like **** if you have a vacc leak and rpm do not flare , the engine misses..........internal carb leak???? nay..... chk the cable as stated make sure it is not binding ,,also when rpm go high can you just tap on accell pedal to make it come down??? and anytime you are idling high and put car in gear the car will slam that is caused because rpm are so high ,, i would remove air cleaner chk and spary accell cable and all linkages,

sometimes people try to adjust the idle with the hold open diaphram on the passenger side of the carb. get a long skinny phillips screwdriver and back that screw up till it is clear of it's lever. The idle adjust screw is on the back of the carb, it has a black **** on it and a screwdriver slot in the middle of it.
You might also want to check the throttle plates for sticking or binding.
