Switchin 5th gen. tranny from auto to Manual . . . is it possible???
Im new to cars and i dont know too much of all the mechanical stuff, plus im only in high school and i havent started my auto courses yet, so this question might sound a lil absurd.
Anyways that out of the way: I just bought my dads car off him and it is a 97' Honda Accord SE which is an auto and has round 125K miles on it, but i dont want an auto. I definitely want a manual and i was wondering if i could get the tranny switched out for a 5-speed manual tranny??
I have no idea if this is possible or if it will be compatible with the same engine or i would have to get a different engine for a manual transmission (a rumor i heard).
BUT if it is possible i would like to know and i would also like to know how much a 5-speed tranny would cost around and how much the whole "makeover" would cost also, just to give me an idea. Also how much i would have to pay for an installation for everything. Or would it be possible for me to do it in one of my automotive courses??
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
~Thx

if it's the SE, it should be the 4cyl..... and yea, it's very possible, it's not that hard really, just time consuming and kinda pricey... there's alot of parts you need... it's easier just to sell it and buy an accord with a stick
If you're really into this project ("I really want to see if I can do it" type) then the cheapest route would be for you to buy a parts or salvage car for the same year with a standard transmission and swap everything over. Preferably one that was hit in the rear.
Not only would you have everything you need, but you'd also gain the experience of disassembling a car without hacking up yours first; and knowing how things came apart gives you the insite to how it goes together.
In addition, if your "parts" car was also an EX, you'd now have everything you'd need to swap in a F22B1 SOHC Vtec ! (along with Leather interiors, additional Gauge Cluster and other interior pieces)
