syncromesh question.
i have a major ginding problem going into 5th gear. and on top of that, sometimes tis a struggle getting it out of 5th.
ive read on here several times the alot of people use gm syncromesh for grinding.
but i thought syncromesh was an additive.
well how do yall use it? just fill it up with syncromesh?
where do you add it? in the clutch resivoir?
thanks in advance!

I don't know about it being an additive.....but I just drained my tranny fluid and replaced it with "syncomesh" gm type
There are two types of synchromesh. There is synchromesh, and synchromesh friction modified. The FM you can get at the GM dealer, and I beleive Chrysler may sell an additive to the regular fluid. The regular synchromesh is comparable to Honda MTF and the Penzoil type (available at parts stores). You need the FM if you're getting a grinding problem.

drain the tranny oil through the drain plug on your trans and refill with 2 quarts of new stuff. I used Pennzoil (GM syncromesh equivalent). On my B series S1, it cured the dreaded 3rd gear grind.

wow that thread is an awesome write up. would never think to fill it through the speed sensor. i also to have the 3rd gear grind and cant wait to change the fluid with the synchromesh. is that penzoil stuff from autozone the same as the friction material from gm? and how much is the price difference?
the pennzoil is the same as the regular gm snynchromesh, not the friction modified. I used to use honda mtf but sometimes it would shift harder, not too hard but it didn't slide in that I would've liked for it too. I put in the pennzoil snchromesh and it takes a little while but then it shifts really smooth now. When I changed mine I didn't know about the vss trick but I had a tube that fit through the vent hole and I used that but of course it did take a lot longer. Honda missed it on the drain fill, it's so hard to get a funnel with a long tube to reach in there and I can't really see it but there's something inside the hole that keeps you from putting the tube in too far and it's always backing out f... all that crap, vss is the wtg for me

Correct. The penzoil and regular synchromesh are less than $5; the FM is around $15 per quart.
I've used both Honda MTF and Penzoil Synchromesh (changing every 15K) and have found no real difference between the two.

i only grind third when at high rpms and every other shift is smooth as hell. i will pay the 15$ a qt if it does the trick. but if the 7 or 8$ a qt penzoil stuff does the same **** then ill go with that. what can i say, im a broke college student... racer

No, they are different formulas. Some people do say that the grind goes away with the regular fluid, but I'm assuming that's just because they were in serious need of a fluid change. If the fluid is old, and not working properly, it can give hard shifts, and I'm asuming it may be possible to cause a grind if it's bad enough; but like I said, that's just speculation.

Its call "Matrix" markup at certain dealership. MSRP is half of that.

if you don't have lsd than regular synchromesh is just fine. If you have lsd I would get the fm. The pennzoil is quite a bit cheaper than the gm brand although I don't remember what I paid for mine but I did buy it at autozone.
