need advice for buying tires
The Kumho ASX is a good value tire if you are looking for all-seasons. If you are looking for top of the line performance and handling try the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 or Bridgestone Potenza S03 Pole Position. The Dunlop Sport Maxx is also available with a $50 mail in rebate currently available.
Additional information would be helpful, such as...
1. What year/make/model of car are these for? (Or do you already know what size tires you need...?)
2. What are your priorities among factors like dry traction/handling, wet traction/handling, purchase price, treadlife, etc.? (Based on your location, I assume they will not be used in snow or temperatures well below freezing, so you don't need all-season tires.)

Then you want 205/40-17 tires. And it sounds like you want tires that will perform well, but will also last a reasonably long time, and do okay in rain as well as on dry pavement, and not the most expensive tires around.
I agree with Clay that the S-03 ($165/tire) and the F1 GS-D3 ($143/tire) are excellent tires, but it sounds like you don't really want to spend the money for the performance that these top-of-the-line tires offer. So I'll assume you want something lower in price.
If you want very good performance at a decent price, then I would suggest the Kumho MX, $101/tire. If you want an even better price, but still with decent performance, then I would suggest the Kumho ECSTA SPT for $68/tire, the Fuzion ZRi for $70/tire, or the Yokohama AVS ES100 for $89/tire. I would probably choose the Kumho among these last three, so it all comes down to whether you are willing to pay the extra money for the better performance of the MX, otherwise get the SPT.
