NHRA Xplod Sport Compact Series TV Show?
I feel like the TV coverage suck. They barely show any racing, Pro driver interviews etc. etc. On powerade nhra show they showed everything round after round of drag racing and alot of good interview and pit coverage.
Why dont they cover the import/ sport compact show alittle better. Plus why not do a whole 1hour show then the 30min Show with alot crap, stylefest, models, Dj, partyin crap...etc..
It just bug me... i would like to see more/ good coverage on drivers for different classes and drag cars and races ... what do you guys think about the TV SHOW?

I agree 100%. Their TV coverage sucks.
I have a feeling the NHRA has "experts" that say people want to see what they are showing in the 30min they show. Unfortunately those "experts" dont know crap. (speculation only)
SHOW US 1 HR OF DRAG RACING!!!!! I could care less about bakini contests and car shows, if I want to see that i'll go to Hot Import Nights.
I'm not saying i dont like lookin at hot chicks in next to nothing cuz i do, i'm saying with the 30min of sport compact drag racing that they cover, its no wonder why we dont get the respect we should.

The NHRA Powerade show is 2-2.5 hours every week, they have much more time for this. Frankly I am not sure how NHRA is to know when Week 2 there are 2 Pro RWD cars, Week 4 there is 1, etc. The sport simply isn't large enough right now to fill the entire show in my opinion without getting repetitive over time. That being said the biggest thing that comes into play in this discussion is $$$. It costs money to get this show on the air, personally I Would rather see 30 minutes on prime time than more coverage of racers who are not as commited to the sport.

Detour,
I am assuming what programming you are referring to is the NHRA Xplod Stylefest broadcasts that have begun airing on ESPN2. The Xplod Stylefest broadcasts only cover the extra activities (no racing) at each event (i.e. Bikini Contest, Car Show, etc.) The next Stylefest bradcast is today 7/28 at 330pm EST.
The race broadcasts run approx 10 days to 2 weeks after the event has finished. The race broadcasts are 100% racing coverage. The next Xplod Series racing broadcast (Moroso 2 event) is 9/1 at 2pm EST.
We would love to have a one hour broadcast of the race shows and show each and every run but time on ESPN2 is VERY expensive due to the extensive reach ESPN2 has (almost 90 Million households) compared to time on Speed Channel/Spike/etc.
Thanks for the feedback.

Wes,
You have some great points.
In 2004 all the race broadcasts were run in prime time. The problem with that was were not guarenteed what day/time the shows would run--they fit the shows in when they could.
This was a huge complaint last year by fans, racers and sponsors. The trade was to have the shows run on a consistent day/time so we could publish the shows airing time in advance. 9 of the shows run this year on Thursdays at 2pm EST---10 days after the conculsion of the event.
By doing this the rating numbers (viewers) have actually risen quite a bit according to ESPN. This gives the fans, racers and sponsors a chance to Tivo/tape the events that they cant watch.
NHRA and Masters Entertainment (show producers) work very hard to keep the shows fresh and true to the fans and racers. We have recieved numerous positive comments on the race show production in 2005. People have noticed how we have kept true to not include the "extras" in the race shows. NHRA is first and foremost about the racing and it will always be that way.
Thanks again for the feedback and keep it coming.

This years shows have been a great improvement that is for sure. I personally enjoy the shows and feel they already offer more racing than "other" shows. I think the current timeframe allows a different group of people to watch the program which is important as well. Having it early in the day allows a younger group to be exposed the show and hopefully come to the races as well. The influx in Tivo I believe has also helped incease the ratings, speaking of which I've got to head home and watch some StyleFest

I dont mean to complain or nothin, but i havent even been able to catch one of this seasons shows due when they are air'ed... I dont got TiVo, and i got no way of recording them since i dump all my money in my race car and not home entertainment... (parts for car or VCR... i'll get the parts for the car...)
Gary,
Is the NHRA in contract with ESPN or do you just prefer to have your shows air'ed on that channel? If its cheeper to go with Speed or Spike, and get better time for airing the programs (which would potentualy bring in more viewers), it would be a no brainer to go with those other channels. Of course i dont know all the details of this subject so i could be completely wrong or missing some key things... Just trying to get some info on things ya know...

Mike,
Sorry you havent seen any of the NHRA SC broadcasts this year. At least you have priorities--the race car.
NHRA has an exclusive deal with ESPN--both POWERade, Lucas Oil Series and the Xplod SC broadcasts. Only NHRA sanctioned drag racing will be seen on ESPN for the time being.
The reason this is the best deal for all involved is the exposure. ESPN and ESPN2 are available in almost 90 million households. Speed and the some other stations mentioned are not available in anywhere near that many households (sorry I do not have the exact number).
ESPN and ESPN2 is watched by all sports fans--thus giving the racers and sponsors better exposure to the fans/masses.
Speed Channel is a racing enthusiast station that nearly any motorsports sanctioning body can buy broadcast time on. Speed is not usually on a "low numbered" station so it has to be a destination for a viewer--(its hard to find and a lot of cable companies dont offer the station).
ESPN does not do time buys, for the most part they have "deals" with the "sports" that air on ESPN and ESPN2.
In a nutshell, ESPN gives the Xplod Series better exposure than any other network could. This means the racers, racers sponsors, NHRA sponsors will get more bang for the buck on ESPN.
Sorry I'm not an expert on how the Speed Channel works--but I'm sure SOMEONE will enlighten all of us on the numbers of the Speed Channel--it is common knowledge--I just have not done the research.

it's been awhile since i looked at both shows, but i'd guess that the nhra still has more pure drag racing footage per show... add up the total airtime of cars going down the track, plus the relevant interviews, and get back to us.
i am currently working with an internet advertising agency that claims to be setting up a beta program for pre-roll video advertising for small publishers... it's similar to what you see on msnvideo.com... if it all works out, the revenue should be enough to pay all the bandwidth costs for streaming video, so you could soon see a whole bunch of drag racing footage.
unfortunately there won't be any nhra or nopi footage in there
but that's not my fault.
thanks for weighing in on this, gary.

the nhra xplod tv show is exponentially better this year over previous year's
they do show a lot of drag racing on the drag racing show, and its obvious they are much more focus on showcasing their drivers, which is a good thing
plus, jessica barton is a-ok in my book
to gary
now lets work on getting more people in the seats in colorado and pomona
and comeback to sonoma, think what a kickass crowd would show up if nhra and formula d co-branded an event at sonoma
btw, i don't know who the brainchild was for the new internet banner advertising.. but showcasing kenny vs the domestics is a pretty cool idea
, its nice to see racers on a race advertisment... but now im just really off topic

I think there doing better at covering the events. Wish they would interveiw some of the smaller teams once and a while. After all thats where we all start! It's nice to see the guys winning but everyone that comes out to race makes the sport.
Thanks all . Im glad to hear everyone view.
I know it cost alot of $ just to get it on. But over all yeah it kinda improving and the show is getting there but to me it should be more on drag racing. showing the teams- big boys and small budget lil team, good interview just like powerade.
my friend was joking with me that even ANd1 streetball get more air time or rerun and then NHRA sportcompact but i guess thats ok. Overall cut the joking, partyin crap and show more of the races.
My friend dad said if we take all the party crap and other stuff out and keep it real like the OG's of Muscle car and NHRA Powerade then we'll get more audience and racers. He keep saying import/ sportcompact is joke. lil kids stuff. Step it up and be more professional. Leave all the party stuff off the race track...hahaha..
i kinda agree and i kinda dont too.
He kept on say Domestic / muscle car event is family racing event and well organized and sportcompact is jus a bunch of rowdy kids trying to party than race.
He did admitted its growin but it will fall back on its face with less racers and audience.
OK enough about it. i have a long talked/ debate with him.. Im So sick of it.
Again just want to thanks everyone for their view. ROck on HONDA !

Thanks for the kind words Mike and the help with promoting the Moroso events.
We(Sony Xplod and NHRA) have some huge plans for the Pomona World Finals this year. We are going to try some new things to get more people out and in the seats. We had a very good event last year but we can always do better.
Thanks for the feedback on the banner ads as well. We have hired a new designer that does wonders in Flash. We did 4 different banner ads for the Moroso event. Check out all the different sizes and designs on Urbanracer.com, Overboost.com, Tunerzine.com, Modified.com.
I would love to hear more feedback on the banners. Let me know your thoughts and ideas.
Thanks,

Great stuff Gary, can't wait to come out to FL

I gotta say I think the NHRA coverage of the races is better, the implementation of new staff members in NHRA's tv coverage has also helped a lot. The viewing audience still is probably higher with NOPI because of the timeslot. I'm willing to bet they both will be very close on viewing audience if they aired around the same time.
The show is definetely better with the commentary and show setup. I'd like to see a little more story developed like they do in powerade, but like Wes said that will require more time. I think the show is doing much better then it ever has and that's a testament to the guys at NHRA listening to their fans and the racers.
