HyperFest on July 16-17: Who scammed NASA?
I have been made aware that an ITR forum regular got on-track at Hype-R-Fest and did not pay for it.
In a car community that takes theft, scamming, or any form of impropriety quite seriously, I find it distressing that this kind of behavior is judged to be acceptable by anybody.
This thread is a heads-up to that person that people are watching, and that they should make things right with NASA, privately.
Efforts have been made to contact the non-paying driver, and no response, defense, or payment has been given. So, I think the last resort is to go public, hoping that the possibility of public exposure will spur the person to do what's right.
This is a person known to many of us, so I am hoping that in order to save face, that person will do what's right before their identity is revealed in this thread.
Here is the email address of the NASA-VA registrar, Laura Cobetto. She is the one that needs to receive this payment.

I will touch base with Laura at the close of next week - August 5th - and if she isn't satisfied that payment has been or will soon be remanded to her, then the identity of the non-paying driver will have to be made public.

NASA Virginia/Mid Atlantic have a huge Honda Tech following, and they have grown to trust us.
It was surprisingly easy for the person to get away completely free.

I knew somebody would do that. Congratulations being fastest on the draw.

Were they checking for wrist bands and such?
How did the driver get on track past the staff?
They run a business, they should know better than to blindly trust people.

Dave, there is a good reason for this. The person was at the event in another official capacity, and the driving seemed to be an afterthought.
Laura was at the total other side of the track, and couldn't be reached. But there seemed to be no reason not to trust someone who had come to the track in that capacity.

Dave, I think we'd be better served by keeping the tenor of this thread a little more reserved, since there is a lot at stake here. I have been the beneficiary of Laura's trust, and I'm a little incensed that someone took advantage of it.
The amount of money isn't huge, but the significance is more than just monetary. It involves the trust between NASA and the H-T ITR community, which is an enviable bond, considering that we all really drive kids' cars. It also involves the ITR community's real ability to police itself, which I take a bit of pride in.
I love making fun of RJ too, but there's no shortage of opportunities for that.

Whoever is responsible needs to pay up though. Taking the trust invested in you as a member of their volunteer staff and using it to your advantage is f'd up.

RJ, I don't want to reveal too much at this point, since it's still possible that the person intends to pay and just hasn't gotten around to it.
I have a tendency to procrastinate, so I'm going to allow for that on this person's part. However, their refusal to answer Laura or anyone else is worrying.
I have said that it's a well-known member of the ITR community, so you can interpret that to mean that they own an ITR.

Someone (not Laura or anyone working for NASA) asked me how well I knew the non-payer, and then told me the situation. However, no one asked me to make this post.
Laura was very good to me that weekend, and accomodated my circumstances. I want to make sure she can continue operating that way, rather than having to deal in a stiff and heavy-handed manner with everyone to avoid even the possibility of getting scammed.
There's a really nice little community around these NASA events, and even though I'm just a peripheral member at the moment, I feel really welcome there and would like to preserve the atmosphere.

Only reason I asked is that there could have been some circumstance where the track time was approved and the third party that relayed the info did not know about it. That couldn't have been the case at all, however.

Wow, this is pretty poor. Come out, come out, whoever you are. You have to have the money to pay for this. I mean, after all, you're an ITR owner, and all ITR owners are rich ******, right?
Seriously though, that's pretty messed up. Pay up sucker, don't ruin it for the rest of us by taking advantage of some very cool people.

That could be, but She was working in the tower, lap counter.. I think. So I would guess that they know she was out on track. Or I at least hope that she got an approval before going out.

I talked to the person in question and an email has already been sent to Laura. I think it was a misunderstanding. Let's hope things get sorted out.
