Safe to drive to Vegas on very worn tires?
So I have a set of Yok. ES100s on the car. On the front the tread is even with the wear bars. The rears have about 1/16 an inch of tread before the wear bars.
I need to drive from Phoenix, AZ to Vegas. Think I will be okay?

Do you gamble much? The only reason I ask is that very reason. It's a gamble. I learned my lesson with a 93 LS. I'll never risk it again. I got into an accident at 5 MPH. SUCKED but it's up to you.
Yeah, not too worried.
Well, Discount Tire quoted me $333 on a new set of ES100s mounted and balanced, so if they can get them on before Friday morning I will do it.

Your grammar, bad it is.

I drove from VIR to Chicago on corded summer tires, in the slush.
That was interesting! Just last week, I drove through a torrential downpour with 3" of standing water in Hankook Z214's.
If the weather is fair, and your alignment isn't drastic in the toe/camber area, you'll be fine.
<-- pillar of bad tire preparedness

Is that your latest strategy to prevent your car from catching on fire again?

I dont get it.
If it starts raining. stop. If not, go. You guys have some bad answers.
chris - who would go with no issues. just be careful when it initially rains (i.e., slick) or just stop altogether. but does it EVER rain there?

You're considering a 600 mile round trip on tires that last over 30,000 miles. Which means the tires aren't going to suddenly wear down to the belts on this trip. Especially the rear tires, which don't wear as fast as the fronts.
I would switch the tires so the ones with more tread are on the front. And I would do the trip on those tires. If it started to rain, I would slow down (and I mean REALLY slow down, not just 5-10 mph slower) and pull over if traction became a problem.
FWIW, Las Vegas averages only about 4.5 inches of rain a year (compared with 8 in Phoenix, 13 in Los Angeles, 36 in Chicago, 49 in New York, and 59 in Miami).

i drove from columbus ohio to chicago on tires that had cords showing... i'll NEVER do it again, but I say yoru fine if its just down to the bars, like others said w/o rain.
Great points about the whole risk of death thing from rain
However, no one has mentioned this yet so I will. What happens when you run over a piece of glass or a nail at 80mph or so on your way through the desert? when your tires are that thin it just goes right through.
But if you don't give a **** I vote you put the money on black

I agree. Any small debris, and the brutal heat can melt already worn tires easier..

When I bought my R in Jersey the kid that sold it to me said that one of the tires had a nipple in it. Needless to say when I got there all 4 tires were down to ther belts. The front tires I could pull the tread on the inside and touch the outside sidewall. Searched for hours for a tire place and couldnt find one. Had to drive 300 miles back to my house in a rainstorm.
