Too much engine oil bad?
Hey guys. I did a search but didn't come up with anyone with the same problem. Three weeks ago when I changed my engine oil, I put one quart too much (5.2 instead of 4.2). I checked the dipstick when I was putting in the oil in and it seemed like it needed more. Only later did I realize it was too much as per recommended amt. Is 5.2 qt. too much oil and very bad for the gaskets or does it really matter? I've been driving it for 3 weeks now with no problems. I would need to redo an oil change if were to drain it a bit I think. Thanks for your input.
I'd think you just lose a bit of horsepower possibly. I'd doubt it would hurt the engine. If it was that fragile, you'd have rebuilt it already!
Just my thoughts.

Yes you should drain the extra oil. The lubrification of certain components of the engine is made by the splashing of the crankshaft in the oil. If there is to much oil, the splashing will be less important, meaning less lubrification.

With too much oil, the crankshaft can churn the oil causing frothing. This can cause air to get into the oil pump. Not a good thing. Also may lose HP as the crank is now turning in oil. I believe a half quart over is ok, I have been told some people do this for track events. One quart over is definitely too much.

hmm. i better drain it then. the dealer sold me these washers for 60 cents a piece, to replace the one on the drainplug whenever i change it. hopefully not too much oil will drain out and i'll be able to just drain the extra quart. Thanks for the inputs.
you will just have a little less HP. nothing too detrimental to your engine.

nothing quite like a blown main seal, or the possibility of not being able to rev over 4 or 5k rpm. there IS a honda bulletin on this subject.
