turbo kit
I've read alot of complaints about the amount of torque at the low end (no problem right? just rev up), but then i've read alot of complaints about shifting and clutch delay things, and slip differential.... bla bla bla...
this brings up a question in my mind (for those who are about to bark WAIT- i tried the search, no luck)
how much would a simple turbo kit cost? how long would it take to install? what are the benefits (bhp wise), and are there any necessary accesories i must purchase with it(for the engine)?
many thanks
Alex

Hi,
Lets start with the clutch delay. 2004 and up if memory serves have it and you can modify to get rid of it. Also the 2004 and up have more mid and low torque than the 200-2003 but I own a 2002 and just like keeping the revs up wich does me just fine.
Turbo cost. This depends on how much you want to spend really. Quality, all the parts, and bhp that you are looking for will be important. So lets break this down.
Turbo kit A, smaller turbo, log manifold, e-manage piggyback, and small front mount, cheap hoses, clamps, and etc. This kit will get you by and give around 270whp. You won't get much more and will need to tune the crap out of it and still may not get it right. There are a few successful people with a kit like this at around 300whp. Cost around 4k.
Turbo kit B, medium sized turbo, log manifold, better quality parts, good sized intercooler but still a piggyback e-manage. around 5.5k
Turbo kit C, gt series turbo, tubular manifold, high quality parts, good intercooler, and AEM EMS (purchase seperate but I will include it in the price) , around 7k-8k. This is by far the best choice if you want to make better than 350whp.
Labor for install. Give or take 8-15 hours depending on the kit and installer. Tuning will be a few hours and you should be able to run the stock motor for some time around 8psi without any problems. The key is good quality parts with a well balanced tune. Cost around 2k-3k depending on how much time and tune is needed for the set-up.
Then you got gages. Cheap is 350 bucks with a pod. Quality expect around 900-1100 bucks to run a wideband with the AEM and a boost gauge controller.
All in all if you want to do it right I suggest around 10k or so. People have built their own kits for less, done the install themselves, and other things to save money. Risky but if you have the knowledge it can be done.
Hope this gives you a start.

Once you get in the power in an AP1 you won't fall out, it's geared very well. The lack of torque isn't as big of problem as they say, unless you are on a low-speed technical road course.
