Default tach jumps around and car surges "96 accord V6"

My car runs fine untill it warms up. Then the tach jumps all over the place and the car will surge while driving. At stop lights it sets at zero and some times the car will die. I was thinking it might be some sort of sensor but I cant think of which one. My second guess is the distributor needs replaced.

Any help is appreciated,
Wayne

Your tach signal comes direct from the ignition system.

ok thanks for the help, I kinda already knew that. I am wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem though.

check your ignition control module inside the distributer...that could be the cause or perhaps a sensor that is inside the distributer is bad...

check your battery output and your alternator output. I have had more than one car act like that when the alt went out on it.

Bad grounds will make your tach jump around. This happens sometimes if the battery posts get alot of buildup and your ground is not grounding well.

thanks a bunch. I will have to change that and do some major tune up stuff as well. I pulled the distributor cap and the teeth on the cap were about to snap off.
