Default Carbon Fiber Hood VS. STOCK hood

ok, ive had a VIS carbon fiber hood now for a while. At first i liked it, but now im having my doubts

imho it looks tacky and doesnt match the car

im starting to feel like CF hoods are the new rice

so this poll is express how you feel about CF hoods, UNPAINTED

maybe im going insane lately, who knows

im thinking that if i keep the car, im doing the JDM front end completely stock look, NO CF...but i could change my mind

If you're wondering this, you didn't buy your carbon fiber hood for the weight savings.

Which means you bought it for aesthetics.

Unpainted body panels aren't nice, IMHO.

And where is the poll?

You should do what you want.

Personally CF is a big from me. I like how it looks and it saves weight. Plus you can paint it if you want & save weight as well.

It's a win-win situation.

they tend to work better when latched tho. one crappy shop...

the bad luck never ended with that car, everyone told me it was the color. i finally got tired of the damn thing after 6 brake master cylinders, 2 brake booster, clutch master cylinder... u get the picture, all within a few months of each other on a low mileage 95.

didnt really do much to the hood. broke the support on the back side due to it flexing so much when it smacked up on the roof and glass, but other than that, not bad at all.

i would buy CF again tho. i still think it looks sweet.

is there a way to prevent the hood from cracking with hood pins. from what I see there on the pic it looks like the fabric is cracking. I just got a pair last week and just scared to put them on, I don't want to ruin my hood, mind you I want safety obviously.

function > form

A painted carbon fiber hood would be the best of both worlds imo.

EDIT: Anyone know the weight savings?

do it yourself and take your time. thats what i found out. u pay someone to do it, but they wont be as careful as if you were doing it to your own hood. i was afraid to do my own, but wish i had.

they used a bit that was to big and dull, and tried just ripping through it with a big router.

Agreed. Which in turn makes it the "new rice" to him.

There are HUGEE variances in CF Hoods. I've seen and felt VIS ones that are close in weight to stock. Mine on the other hand weighs less than 10lbs and I can actually see through. If I'm under my car I can see light coming through the weaves . I'm not sure what company it is though as it was on the car when I bought it. I just cant bring myself to put the stock heavy hood on although it would probably look a little better..... whatever

How many times do you say you buy stuff for its functionality - then ask stupid **** like this?

stop pretending. just admit it already and move on.

I have an unpaint vis oem style CF hood on my usdm front itr...
well, sometimes i like the looks with paint hood more but then paint is the weight...
so what is the point to paint the CF part...right?!...unless something wrong with the surface of the CF parts...otherwise i still prefer not to paint them

btw, the VIS CF hood does weight less than stock, well...maybe around 15lbs...i am sure it won't weight same as stock lol

Please. Who in this thread actually counts their saved weight for a good reason? Or just a way to justify your spending and have people 'check out' your ****!? Probably not too many

chris - who has no idea why he cares other than this BS has no value to anyone, cept maybe the appearance forum. Wait. shouldn't this be in there???

I believe CF/FRP hoods originally were released to car diet fanatics particularly in the FF crowd to reduce every bit of weight possible without

a) running without a hood
b) cutting and gutting the skeleton

This was done to give the car better turn in response.... which is probably not something an average street car/street driver would be able to feel or determine anyway.

Popular car show culture has turned CF into a fad more than "a function."

LOL, sig-worthy,

At any rate, every CF hood I've seen, touched, felt or looked at on a teg either didn't fit right, wasn't actually good looking enough to not need a paint job to cover it up and or worse yet was just about as heavy as stock.

The only real ultra light weight pieces I've experienced were Fiberglass resin. Super thin, and super light and cheaper than blingin CF but these were on real race cars.

I actually find it more attractive when you spot a car that is extremely well done and not draped in carbon fiber. Little "accents" here and there add a good, classy touch (ITR Wing CF lip addon for example), but getting the hood, lip, hatch, wing, mirrors, airbag blocker, 3M vent/dash covers.... that's just tacky.
