S1 vs YS1
I have an S1 tranny right now but my buddy has a YS1 tranny that i could get. Neither have LSD so that does not help me choose. I have an all motor LS/VTEC swap in my crx...no forced induction. Which is a better tranny? i have searched and all i find is YS1 vs Y1
S1, YS1 there are different ratios with each one. There is jdm s1 which is geared pretty short and there is usdm LS S1 which is tall. There are a few different YS1s also. The only was to be sure is to take them apart, or know what kind of car were in originally.
The YS1 came out of a USDM 93 LS.....i think the S1 is jdm....I got all the bolt ons from a b16 for my swap and the ecu is a pw0 which is jdm if im not mistaken.. correct me if im wrong

As I understand it, there are 3-4 versions of the YS1 - the 92-93 Integra LS/RS/GS USDM transmission, which had a 4.2 FD, and the nice 92-93 JDM Integra XSi tranny that had a 4.4 FD and optional LSD. There is also the USDM 92-93 Integra GSR YS1, which has the best gearing of all - but no LSD at all.
The JDM YS1 is more desirable than a JDM S1, as far as I can recall. It has a larger mainshaft and bearings, if I remember correctly, and slightly steeper gearing in 1st gear, but the rest of the gearing is pretty much the same.
Personally, I have a JDM S1 with a USDM 90-91 Integra LS fifth gear, and it's great. I'm using an Action 6 puck sprung hub clutch, and it grabs every gear really hard.
EDIT: Someone correct me if I'm wrong on any of this... it's been a while, just going by memory.

if i could have gotten my hands on a JDM YS1 i would go for it. But i am able to choose from two a JDM S1 and a USDM YS1 so I think the better way to go is the S1.

JDM J1 is identical to the JDM S1. Same in every respect.
Check this out, my brother wrote this guide to the swap:

Wasn't too bad, but wasn't the easiest thing in the world to do.

i believe that "short-geared" (mated to b16a in Japan and b17a in USA) YS1's are the same, whether they are USDM or JDM.
at least the spline count is the same on the input shaft. it (spline count) is the same as hydro b-series, as opposed to the other (j1/s1) cable b-series trannies.

Yup, I've heard this as well.
The JDM YS1 and B17 YS1 both have the large mainshafts, and I think the gearing is the same.

Correct, jdm ys1 and 92-93 usdm ys1 (gsr) are the same exactly. The JDM version had an option of lsd, meaning only some had it. They are much better than any S1 tranny, and parts can be had at the local dealer if needed also.

I dunno, that short *** first gear would kinda suck with my LS/VTEC, it revs up quick enough right now.
They are stronger and more reliable though, and rebuildable with dealer parts to boot.

all-motor it has to be the ys1. the gears are short and the revs are higher in 5th, but it really isn't that bad, unless you drive the car at 100 mph for long distances ALL THE TIME.
i drove in the AZ desert with my YS1 and was spinning 5500 RPMs at 100 mph and still averaged 28 miles per gallon with my b16a.

The ys-1 is fucken amazing. First gear is rediculously short, and the rest of the gears just eat up rpms like nuts. My ys-1 is attached to a pr3 b16a 5 mil, with a pw0 ecu. and i just fly thorugh the gears.....you hit 5th before you know it.
Here's a great link that specifies all the gear ratios. http://www.hondaswap.com/forum...29829
The S1 and J1 are identical, and the YS1 just has a shorter 1st gear compared to the S1 and J1. The Y1 looks to be the longer geared tranny with the exception of the 5th gear. Hope this helps

i would like to add that
i have he jdm sir1 b16 y1 trannie and it sucks. its the longest geared b16 trannie ever built. i use to have the shored geared s1 /j1 and there is a big differance gearing. the y1 has longer gears and a the 4.2 final drive. this makes the gearing between the y1 and the si quit different. i can go almost to 100mph is 3rd gear at 8k. 5th gear crusing at 80mph is a hair under 4k which makes this trannie even longer than the usdm hydro trannies.
