Default transmission problem--86 civic

here's the info:
86 civic, 190k km

My car has what i am told is a "hondamatic" transmission. Basically, to drive normally, i start in "1", shift to "2" and then shift to "OD".

Recently, when i shift into OD from 2, the car makes really loud whining/grinding noise, proportional to the speed of the engine. But, it doesnt do this all the time. When it does not, and it shifts into OD just fine, that gear works fine with no abnormal sounds at all. This also sometimes happens when i am already in OD and slow down for soemthing and give it throttle again, the whining starts. Before, i could just downshift into 2, and back into OD, and everything would be fine. Recently, it is happening a lot more often now.

Is the tranny jsut fucked meaning a costly bill, or could it be something simple like an adjustment on a linkage or something.

Right now, i can drive the car just fine in 1 and 2, but the revs are pretty high in 2, so i wouldnt mind having OD back.

Any thoughts?
